Unnecessarily Ornate Dremel Bit Caddy
This caddy displays Dremel bits while reducing the risk of damage by keeping them in individual holders. It includes a drawer and a compartment to store additional accessories.
This project is a great way to use up random wood scraps. Caddy includes cherry, walnut, purple heartwood, padduck, sapele and bloodwood.
Plus, it has sparkles...

Drill Holes in Dowels
The dowels will be glued into the base and support the upper shelf with 1/4" dowel between them. The top three dowels secure the shelf (you really only need one but I like how it looks with three).
Drill 1/8" holes in both dowels at 3", 8". 8.5"
Drill 1/4" holes in both dowels at 9"
Mark/Drill Holes
Pencil a grid pattern across both shelves.
On bottom shelf trace 3/4" hole on right and left for dowels.
On bottom piece of compartment trace 3/4" hole on only the right side (so that shelf can swing open to reveal compartment). Cut out the left hand corner in a 1" square.
Drill out holes for bits. Drill all the way through the wood. In the next step a bottom piece is glued on. This makes it easy to make all the holes the same depth.
Drill out holes for the dowels with a 3/4" hole saw
Drill holes for bits - Customize to fit your collection (add sizes)
Construct Base, Drawer and Middle Compartment
After the bit holes are drilled, glue on the 1/4" bottom piece and clamp until dried.
Use hole saw to drill hole for the dowel and sand if necessary.
Glue up base and clamp.
Glue drawer.
Shellac
Shellac all pieces prior to adding inlay and crystals.
Glue Inlays
Glue veneer circles and crystals around shelves.
Assembly
Glue 1/8" dowel between large dowels
Affix large dowels to base.
Place compartment over dowels
Place shelf over dowel
Glue in top dowels
Enjoy your well organized Dremel bits!
