Ghost Box Helmet Kinetic Art - Ghostkube

Ghostkube Is a Kinetic Sculpture Based on Moving Origami by Erik Åberg from Stockholm, Sweden. One of the project i like more is a helmet you able to see it on all his videos. On the inspiration of that i plan to make a similar model. First of all thank him for a great idea, I want to do lot of his models especially very easy shape changing items.

After lot of hard times this is the new project to change mind from hard time for me. I think you also enjoy this project because every one like chain reaction. This project is similar to chain reaction because on activate a box it reflect to the last box.

Materials Required

1) Corrugated Cube Boxes - 3" X 3" X 3" - 24Nos ( I purchase 3L X 3W X 3H Inch Reverse Tuck Brown Carton Single Wall - 3 Ply from Upack.in)

2) 2" Cello Tape.

3) 1" Cello Tape.

Tools

1) Scissors

2) Craft knife.

Check the youtube video of ghostkube lot of times and plan the pattern in the cad and calculate no of boxes required. Then make the same arrangement in the tinkercad and on seeing the movement of the boxes in the video plan the joints, joints are marked as red cylinder in the tinker cad. Tinkercad file attached in the next step.

Make cardboard box by own is a cheap method and when come to huge nos better to purchase it. So i plan for the size 3" X 3" X 3" cube box when check with lot of web site found atleast one side with four part closing. Finally found this tuck type box in both sides in Upack.in. Tuck all the 24 box to cube and check the hardness its superb. Now 24 cubes are ready.

1) Split the plan to similar type parts and start joining. First we make the square joint which is mark as green box in the image.

2) It needs 12 boxes and 4 boxes joint together for each sides.

3) Use 2 inch tape to join the boxes.

4) First order four boxes and draw a line in the box 1" from the wall which want to apply tape. so that the tape split equal for two boxes.

5) I use red tape to show which side i tape (if use brown tape then the joint is invisible).

6) Want to tape on both sides of the box because when flip on both side it hold the other side. If paste on one side then the tape tare.

7) Like wise connect all the four boxes and join the first and last box.

8) Make 2 similar joints. So now we use 12 boxes.

Check the video want to do more.

1) For step 2 Joint we take the center 6 boxes its marked as green color in the picture.

2) Arrange the box as per the drawing and draw line in one inch like previous style.

3) Use the tape joint the boxes. First joint 3 pair of boxes and then connect the 3 pair to each other.

4) So for step one 12 box and for step two 6 box . so we use 18 boxes.

This joint is superb when compare to first joint.

1) In the step 3 joint take the previous joint in step2 which is mark as blue color in the picture.

2) Take 4 boxes for the green boxes in the picture.

3) First arrange the boxes as per image and joint the four boxes with the six boxes.

4) Now we use all the 24 boxes.

5) After complete this step you able to make some basic shape changes with this boxes. see the video for more.

One step ahead its change from one shape to another.

1) The Final Joint, Now have a single joint mark as blue color in the picture and three similar joints marked as brown color in the picture.

2) Arrange the joints as per the image.

3) Use the 2inch tape and make the joint .

4) In this step its really hard if you work single to put joint. Use ruler to insert the tape in to the gap and paste.

5) This step take a long time for joint.

6 ) Now all the joints Complete. check it as a helmet see the next step.

Its perfect close for my head.

But the problem is now the weight is increase in all the joint, so its start remove from the tape. So want to increase the tape and hole the tape we already provided in the same position.

Its take more and more time. Use 1" tape and tape the 2" tape with the body of the box. so it hole the box tight and make the movement like smooth. It also prevent the 2" tape from tare and remove from the box surface. But you want to work for very long time because you want to insert the tape between the joints and want to work very careful else the 1" take hold the body of the box or 2" tape and tare it.

Its really work perfect see the video of the chain reaction of the action if activate only two boxes.

Check the video its really nice. But if with out increase the joint holding with out tape all the boxes falls down separately. When put this on the ground it looks like a robot standing. I also plan for some other movement with 16 boxes to make repeatable movement on press one box. Its really nice. If 3D printer then its also a nice one because the joint is hard.
