Hello everybody !

Today i will teach you how to get an authentic, vintage and rustic wood box from a classical wine box.

It's a project i've made during my studies a long time ago. so i've take new pics to show you the differents step.

Preparing Our Magic Potion.

We need :

A bottle - Vinaigre ( used in cooking ) - rusted metal pieces.

Pouring the vinaigre in the bottle. Add the rusted pieces and wait for days. The mixture will turn brown.

When the mixture is dark brown, you can use it !

INFO POINT :

What is our mixture ?

  • The vinaigre is attacking the rust.
  • when the vinaigre becomes brown it's because it contains micro particle of rust. this will be very usefull for the burning step.
  • When we will apply the mixture on the wood, the wood will absorb the metal particles and will become brown.
  • The metal particles will dissipate the heat and create located burning area.

Applying the Mixture on the Wood

What can i say ?

Just use a brush to apply the mixture on the wood.

You can apply different layers to obtain differents tints.

the final tint will be different in function of the wood you use.

Let dry the wood during 24h00 minimum.

Now it's time to unsheathe our heat gun !! see you on step 4

I take the oportunity to try other wood like MEDIUM and OREGON PINE but it doesn't work well so... You have to try the wood before starting this instructable

You can apply more than 1 layer, more there is rust "incrusted" into the wood more easy will be the burning step

Now we will use our heat gun to burn the wood.

I use a flat tip to direct the heat and work in the direction of the wood grain.

The heat heater the metal particles and make the wood burn. The result is ultra realistic !

now you can burn the wood at different place and create your own weathered effect.

Clearing the Wood

When you think your burning step is done, use iron mesh to clean the burns.

Know use beeswax to give authentic aspect to your box.

This is a box i've made during my studies.

At this time i didn't take pics of differents steps so i apologies if some parts looks "empty" or undetailed.
