IPod Touch/iPhone Mount for VW Golf/GTI/Jetta
iPod Touch/iPhone mount for VW Golf/GTI/Jetta. 1999-2005. This is my first instructable, and although it is very car and device specific, it may give ideas to other tinkerers. They make mounts specifically for these cars, but instead of spending $50-$100+, I spent $12, and like the placement of the iPod much better.
What You'll Need
What you'll need:
iPod touch/iPhone clip.
(I purchased this in the mall at one of those booths that sell cellphone accessories.) Cost $11. This was my main purchase.
Thin, pliable piece of metal. I took mine off the back of an old hard drive.
Two nuts and bolts
Two self taping screws
Spray Paint
Thin foam (optional)
Oh, and a car. Preferably one of the ones mentioned previously.

The Beginning
Removing the center vents.
To pull out the vents, use a screwdriver and pry them gently from the center out. They should come out rather easy. Use torx screws left and right side. Pull out entire unit, may require a little force. Don't pull it out too far, wires will still be connected.
Metal plate
I pried off this metal backing from an old hard drive. You can purchase a piece at a hardware store.
After prying it off, I figured where it would need to be bent in order to attach it to under the dash, between the vents.
Bend the plate in a vise, and flatten out an defects. (I also had to goo gone the stickers).
After figuring the placement, I primed, painted, and put a little semi-gloss on the plate

Attaching the IPod Clip
This was the difficult part. Finding nuts and bolts that worked. Taking the clip and the metal plate to the hardware store, I needed to attach the clip to the mount, without loosing the ability to rotate the clip.
After finding nuts that are not too long, drill holes in both the clip and mount and attached them with the screws.

Attaching the Mount and Finish
Drill two holes in the metal plate. (mine already had one in it)
Then use two self tapping screws and drive them through the soft and hard plastic under the dash. These screws combined with the force of the vent housing really keep the mount sturdy.
Put everything back together, if using a tape deck or you need to hide wires running to the stereo, tuck them behind the vent housing before screwing back together.
Use a piece of thin foam if needed on the iphone clip. The iPod touch is a little thinner than the iPhone.
And viola! Not only can you listen to your tunes, but watch movies too. Preferably not while driving.
I apologize if this is not the best write up. Next time I'll pay more attention to the details as I go. It is my first instructable and I hope someone can use it.
