How to Build a Wingbone Turkey Call
This instructable will be a description of how to build a wingbone turkey call. This call is easy to build, but difficult to master. However, calling in a turkey with a call you made yourself out of another turkey is a very rewarding experience. please note the pictures are not mine so i take no credit for them.
Gather Materials
Materials:
a turkey (one that you legally shot or found)
glue
water
Tools:
saucepan
stove
knife
pipecleaner
hacksaw
Separate the Wings
Start with the whole turkey, then clean it as you normaly would, by plucking or filleting. Then take off the wings by twisting to pop out the joint, then cut the tendon to separate the wing. then repeat with the other wing.
Clean the Wings
Now take your knife and strip off as many feathers as you can. Next clean off all of the meat and separate the bones shown in the picture.
Cut the Bones to Size
Now take your hacksaw and cut the knobs off the ends of all the bones. try to keep the bones as long as possible while keeping the diamater the same and exposing the marrow. do this to both ends of all 3 bones.
Clean Out the Marrow
Now take your pipecleaner and run it through to clean out all the morrow as you possibly can. sometimes the largest bone will have a lattice of bone through the middle. if you get one like this, ignore it, as it will be adressed later.
Boil the Bones
Now you will boil the bones to lossen up the ecces morrow and meat. boil for 30 minutes, then clean. boil, clean, repeat. do this until all of the meat and morrow is off the bones, usually 1-3 times. Now if your largest bone had now morrow in it, take a power drill or dremel tool to clean it out.
Dry Fit the Bones
Next, take your bones and arrange them from smallest to largest in the order shown. make sure that the flat side of the smallest piece is exposed, as it will be your mouth piece. Now stick the bones together. this may take a little sanding or a tack with super glue.
Glue the Bones
Once you have dry fit the bones and they are how you want them, mix up a batch of epoxy and apply it liberally to the joints.
Personalizeation
Now you can do what you want to the call, laser engrave it, paint it, or add a lanyard. the choice is up to you!
Use
To use the call, insert it in the corner of your mouth and clamp your lips tightly around it to create a seal. do not bite the call! then simply make a smacking sound. practice until you get the basic yelp down. then start stringing them together to make clucks and yelps. this teqnique can take a while to master, but if your looking for a call that turkeys don't hear everyday, this is probably a great choice! also feel free to post any pictures of your personalized calls and turkeys that you took with them in the comments! don't forget to rate!
