Hand-warming Mittens

077.JPG
I loved the idea of having cute little rice bags to keep my hands warm, but I didn't like the idea of having to carry them or keep them in my pockets.  These are the perfect thing to keep your hands warm on a super cold day.  Just pop them in the microwave to warm them up, then slip them on your hands.   Toasty!

Materials

Fleece
Fabric scissors
rice
sewing machine

Trace and Cut

Trace your hand onto the fleece.  Then cut out 4.  Make sure you leave some generous seam allowance so they don't end up too small!

Creat Pocket

Cut out a pocket for the rice.  It doesn't matter how it's shaped, or how big it is as long as it fits in the palm of the mitten.  Once you figure out how you want it to be shaped, trace and copy for the other mitten.  Sew them onto one of the layers of each mitten, leaving one edge of the pocket open.  You should only have two pieces with pockets on them (one on each mitten.)  I used a zig-zag stitch.

Create the Mittens

Sew together, right sides together.  The pocket should be on the inside of each mitten.  Be sure your mittens' thumbs are on oposite sides!!! Don't make two left or right mittens.  Flip them right side out.

Add Rice

Fill each pocket with rice.  Not too much, but enough to keep your hands warm!   Sew the opening shut. It's going to be a little bit of a challenge.  You might have to do some stretching and pulling.

Warm Up and Enjoy!
