How to create a fischertechnik Happy Spur Gears Model.
I play with different educational manipulatives for a living. (Visit www.weirdrichard.com). Over the years I have built different themed models using all sorts of toys. Often, this involves designing robots and other mechanisms.
A useful tool is a <I>Happy Spur Gear Model</I>. This is a model that demonstrates how different gears can mesh well together. Students are often puzzled by the spacing combinations to make a happy gear train.
A word of explaination: A happy gear train is a series of gear pairs that make little sound as they rotate. If the gear pairs are too close, they make a grinding sound. If the gear pair is spaced too far apart, the gear teeth will slip and miss making a wretched sound.
This is less of a problem with fischertechnik with the pin and slot connections than other manipulatives. You can slide ft elements around until the elements fit. Yet, it is important to give students an introduction to basic combinations. I cannot count how many times a
student was absolutely flumoxed about gear combinations. A Happy Gears model is an excellent resource to point a student in the right direction.

Insert a Building Block 30 into the last near slot of a Base Plate 120 x 60. Add (in order) a Building Block 15 with Bore, Building Block 15, a Building Block 7.5 and top off the post with a second Building Block 15 with Bore. Note the bores of the Building Block with Bores are oriented towards the long side of the BasePlate.

Insert a Clip Axle 30 into the first (lower) Building Block 15 with Bore. add a Crankshaft/Bearing Sleeve combination to the far axle end, and a Cog Wheel T10 to the near end.
Fix an Axle Coupling onto a Clip Axle 45, and insert the axle into the upper Building Block 15 with Bore. Note the Axle Coupling is located on the far side.

Fix a Gear Wheel T40/32 onto the Clip Axle 45 with a Flat Hub Collet and a Hub Nut. Add a Clip Adapter and a Link 15 onto the axle end.

Insert a Building Block 30 into the ninth slot from the far end of a Base Plate 120 x 60. Add (in order) a Building Block 15 with Bore, Building Block 15, and top off the post with a second Building Block 15 with Bore. Note the bores of the Building Block with Bores are oriented towards the long side of the Base Plate.

Fix a Gear Wheel T20 onto the Clip Axle 45 with a Flat Hub Collet and a Hub Nut.

Add a Clip Adapter and a Link 15 to the end of the Clip Axle 45.
Turn each of the Crank Shafts in order. Observe the gear pairs as they rotate, and note how smoothly they mesh. Count how many times you have to turn the crank to get one turn of output by observing the Link 15.
