Summer is back! And what better way to spend it than making yourself a nice bathing suit. Anyway I was looking around in my wardrobe and found an old-ish pair of swimming trunks and decided to pimp them out. since i'm a big instructables fan, I decided to incorporate the instructables robot. Also, using natural dyes that can be made in your own kitchen is a great way to be eco-friendly and avoid chemical dyes.

Supplies

you will need:
2-3 yellow onions
3-4 medium sized beets
1/4 pound of turmuric
1-2 pomegranites
aleene's clear gel tacky glue
salt
distilled white vinegar
medium sized strainer
small spray bottle
swimming trunks
computer
printer
craft knife
freezer paper (wax paper)

(optional) a pair of gloves

bring 8 cups of water to a boil and add a cup of white vinegar. add water and vinegar as needed and bring water to a boil. put in your swimwear and boil for about 15 minutes. This is to help the dyes last longer and brighter on the swim suit

first. wash your beets and scrub off as much dirt as possible. this will provide the clearest and truest dye.

second. cut into medium sized chunks and add to boiling water. Then add two tablespoons of salt.

third. bring to a boil and boil for twenty minutes then let simmer and cool for an hour. I left mine over night because it was late but an hour would do just as good.

fourth. strain your dye and remove all the beet chunks so that your left with just the dye. set aside for later

Make Orange Dye

first. Remove onion skin and add to the pot. This will make a nice brownish dye. Then chop up the turmuric and add as well. Remove seeds from pomegranites and add them to the pot

second. Boil for twenty minutes and let simmer and cool for an hour. Crush the seeds and turmuric a bit so that they release as much color as possible.

Make an Instructables Robot Stencil

Print out a picture of the instructables robot and carve out some of the black. If you can freehand the robot or don't want to use him then skip this step. Make sure that you don't cut too much so that pieces fall out. I cut out the things I thought I could use as a guide and left in some the black as a reminder as to where the lines are meant to go

Add Glue

place a piece of freezer paper inside of the leg you want the robot to be on
Fill in the lines that you carved out of the stencil and then remove the stencil. Draw the remaining lines and let dry for twenty four hours

Dye Your Shorts

soak your shorts in a warm dye for about 20 minutes. do one leg at a time and make sure the glue is dry.

Dry the Shorts and You're Done

so noq rinse the shorts in water and peel off the glue. let them dry and you should have a nice pair of swimming trunks.

Conclusion

the dye I made wasn't as strong as I wanted it to be and so i recommend leaving int the beets for a longer time and use less water.also i would add food coloring to make it even strong amd last more than just 7 washes. anyway I hope you enjoyed this instructable and feel free to share your own ideas and methods. also please vote for this instrubtable in the swimsuit contest.
