Dragon Eggs ... My Way

dragon egg 005.jpg
One night not long ago, while reading thru instructables I came upon this "ible" https://www.instructables.com/id/Make-a-gorgeous-Dragons-Egg/   My 3.5yo granson is really into dragons right now  (especially fighting them up and down the street) so I thought this would be a neat project. Knowing that the original idea would be to fragile for an active young boy I went to the craft store and bought some large wooden eggs. The rest of the procress is pretty much the same as the original poster

Getting Ready

along with the wooden egg you'll need a bamboo skewer, a gluegun and glue, paint and brushes and something to make a stand, here I have a piece of aluminum wire, the 1st one I used a lid from a spray can that I hotglued some weights into. A pencil comes in handy unless you want to just freehand your design

Setting Up

I did a sketch of where I wanted the "framework" first then drilled a hole in the bottom and hotglued the bamboo skewer in place

Glue

now trace your lines with the hotglue, you don't have to be exact and drinking lots of coffee ensures squiggly lines. I used a bottle to support the egg during the drying process

Paint

I did the painting in several steps,( hanging the egg in front of a small fan to speed drying time),  a white gesso primer followed by a red undercoat and then a layer of gold paint (sorry the picture for the gold didn't turn out) red supposedly makes the gold look golder, I don't know if thats true but it makes sense. I then used a watered down bright blue to give a vertigre look and finished up with a coat of clear and iredescet mix. It looks milky in the pic but irl it depends on the lighting/angle

Finished
