As Easter is only a few weeks away I thought it would be fun to make a sign to help get the festivities started. This sign is very simple and inexpensive. With some nails, a little yarn, and a piece of wood you can make a egg-celent decorative sign for your Easter celebrations.

Supplies

The supplies necessary for this project include:

  • Wood - Any wood will work for this project, I recommend a 13" x 11" x 3/4" piece.

  • Saw - This is necessary if you need to cut your wood to the correct size.

  • Tape Measurer - This will be a very helpful tool for measuring the wood and centering the paper on the wood.

  • Pre-Stain - This is not completely necessary; however, it will help to keep stain from blotching and give a better overall finish.

  • Stain - This will help to give the wood a nice color and help the yarn pop in contrast to the sign. I suggest choosing a darker stain for this project, but if you have access to a lighter stain you could always just use multiple layers to get your desired color.

  • Rag - You will need to use an old rag for spreading the pre-stain and stain on the wood.

  • Small Hammer - you will need a hammer, the smaller the hammer the better it will work. Using a smaller hammer will make it a lot easier to work with the small nails.

  • Needle Nose Pliers - Although not necessary, these make it much easier to hammer in the small screws.

  • Paper - You will need to print out the Easter egg design onto a piece of paper as a guide for putting the nails in, the PDF is linked below

  • Yarn (Green & Pink) - For this project you will need yarn, a yarn weight of 3 to 4 is good. You can find this number on the back of the packaging.

  • Linoleum Nails - You will want to use 1" nails for this project, this way there is room to attach the yarn but you won't have to worry about the nails poking too far through the sign.

Wood

The first step for making this sign is figuring out what wood to use. Any wood will work just fine, but putting a darker wood will help to make the yarn pop. I suggest the dimensions of 13" x 11" x 3/4" for your piece as that will give a nice border around the egg, but won't take up too much space. Also, if you plan on staining your wood I suggest that you sand it at this point because that will help it to absorb the stain.

Stain

Stain is a great way to make the design of this sign pop in contrast to the dark wood. For this project you are going to want to start by applying a Pre-Stain conditioner with an old rag to help the stain absorb evenly. This will be dry and ready to stain within about 30 minutes of applying your Pre-Stain. Next, you will want to use a different rag and apply the stain. You will then want to wait 24 to 48 for the stain to dry. If you would like a darker look you could always do a second layer of stain as I did.

For this step you are going to start of by taping your Easter Egg print to the piece of wood. You can use a ruler or measuring tape to help center the paper on the wood. Next, you will want to put a nail in every corner of the egg. For the spots that are curved I just put a nail every 1 inch. You are then going to carefully peel the paper from the wood to reveal the nail outline.

For this section you are going to start of by tying a double knot on one of the nails. You can leave a tail on the knot, as this will just be cut off later. Next, you are going to make an outline of the egg using the green yarn. This can be done by going one screw at a time and wrapping the yarn around each screw. Once you have the outline done you can start to fill in the egg. For this you will want to randomly wrap the yarn around until the design is filled with yarn. At this point you will want to bring the yarn back to the starting spot and cut off the excess rope. You will then repeat this process three more times for the small pink zig-zags.
