This is a guide on how to install extra cooling within your xbox 360.

The purpose of this guide is to show others that fans can be added without any serious modification of the original casing and improve the airflow throughout the console.

You will need tools to open the console, a 3 pin to 3 way fan splitter cable(I used a 60cm cable however this is longer than required) and some 40mm fans to fit at the front of the console. You will also need a philipshead screwdriver to tighten the fan screws to the nut.

I am based in the UK as are Shakmods by the looks of things, so finding their splitter cable in the US would be more difficult. If anyone can find a similar wire on American sites I'd be happy to add a link to this guide.

The fans do not need to be RGB but it is easier to see if they are operating correctly after assembly when using LED fans.

I also advise that I have used 2 pin raspberry pi fans for this guide, however if you can find 5V 3 pin fans they should also work. results may vary, always check the amp rating as well as voltage for each fan.

I did try other configurations before settling on this as the most unobtrusive way of changing the internal cooling, without modifying the cables so that the fans can run on 12V etc.

Supplies

  1. Xbox 360 opening tools (US Link, can be found on eBay in the UK) (Or use a Torx Screwdriver set and pry tools)
  2. Shakmods 3 pin fan to 3 ways Y splitter cable (UK Link)
  3. 2x 40x40x10mm DC 5V Brushless Cooling Fan (UK Link)
  4. Philips-head Screwdriver Set (UK Link)

Open Your Console to Access the Motherboard

For this step, simply use the opening tools and follow this video .

Unplug or Move Your DVD Drive Out of the Case

The connectors for the DVD drive are removable, but this is not required for access, so full disconnection is your choice at this stage.

Add Fans to Top Casing

There is space for two of these smaller 40mm fans in the top casing of the Xbox 360. I would suggest having them oriented so that air is pulled down into the device.

Unplug the Original Fan and Add the Splitter Cable

Connect the single end of the triple splitter cable to your Xbox 360 motherboard. Connect the original fan and two new fans to the three opposite ends of the splitter cable.

Testing Phase

Test all three fans are working before reassembly of the console.

Reassembly

Reassemble the console and you can now continue to use the device, there is now a push/pull airflow system in place.
