Wrapping Paper Roll Picture Frame

This is a great project for older kids to make for family and friends. They make great gifts. I made the example used in the pictures for an old friend of my families. She does so much for us, so I framed a painting I did. It says thankful on the bottom so it only fit the gift.

Materials needed:

Four pieces of wrapping paper rolls (two cut to 14 inches and the other two cut to 11 inches).

Poster-board or cardboard (any other stiff material will work)

Scissors

Different Colored Paper that match your picture

Glue (I used hot glue, an Extreme strength glue stick and white glue)

Pencil (I show a carpenter's pencil but any one will work)

A painting on 8.5 by 11 inches paper (any size will work, you'll just have to adjust the roll sizes)

a. Place your painting on the poster-board and trace around the sides. Be sure to use pencil so if your make a mistake you can erase.

b. Take the painting off the poster-board before cutting. Open the scissors all the way and drag one point along your pencil line. This simulates using an Exacto knife. If you have one of those, use it. Once you get a good first cut (your "knife" won't cut all the way through) use the scissors to cut the piece completely from the poster-board.

c. Don't worry about the edges and corners being perfect, you are going to cover these up anyways.

a. Now, we are going to glue the picture to the poster board. I recommend white glue or glue stick for this. Hot glue will not look as good. Put a bunch of glue on the board and place the picture on it. Smooth out all the edges and set this aside.

*side note* now is a good time to plug in your hot glue gun

a. Fold your paper up to the desired swirl width. Cut each of these strips out. I recommend cutting four of each color. You'll notice I used yellow twice. This is because I decided to use it on two rolls. I needed to cut double of that.

b. Put blue on the strip and start at the bottom of the roll. Put one side on the bottom and wrap it around towards the top of the roll. The closer you want the spiral to each other, the more paper you'll need. When you run out of paper, repeat from where you left off. You'll need to touch up the glue here and there, especially on the ends of the paper. When you get to the top of each roll, cut off the excess paper where the roll ends. This will help it look nice and clean. Repeat this on all four rolls.

Hot Glue Gun

a. This is when I used my hot glue gun. Layout your rolls now on the edge of the picture how you want them to look when you're done.

b. Spread the hot glue on one side and place your roll. See the pictures to make sure to get it nearly perfect. Do this on all of the sides. Be sure to see the last picture in this step to see how you should lay them out.

c. When you are all done, reinforce on the back with some more hot glue or white glue. Put some where the poster-board and roll meet.
