Wooden Train With Wagons

We will make a wooden train with 3 wagons in 10 steps.

For this train you'll need this dimensions of wood:

- 4 cm wide x 1 cm thick => 3.3 cm long (This is the frontpanel of the cabinet)

- 5 cm wide x 1 cm thick => 6 cm long (This will be the sidepanels of the cabinet)

- 6.5 cm wide x 1 cm thick => First chamfer the edges of this plank, before cutting the length. After chamfering cut it 7.3 cm long. (This will be the roof of the cabinet)

- 5.5 cm wide x 1.8 cm thick => 15.5 cm long (This is the base of the locomotive)

For the engine we will use wooden wheels with diameter 39mm. If you have a lathe, you can just use your lathe.

I wanted two different colors in the boiler, so I used two different species of wood to make contrast. Make sure your boiler is 6 cm long.

For filling the hole in the boiler we will make a wooden dowel of 6mm. Make a stick of almost 6 by 6mm and nock off the edges on the beltsender. Than you can put it in your drill and drive it through a metal plate with a hole of diameter 6mm. Sand the dowel smooth and glue all your 'wheels' on it.

After letting the glue dry it's time to sand the boiler smooth. Than round over the frontedge and sand away the dowel on the back. On the front you leave a little bit of the dowel, so you can glue a little knob on it for a decorative look. Than sand a bottom on the boiler with the beltsander.

Drill 2 holes for the small wheels (diameter 34mm) on the same height. Drill the third hole a bit heigher for the bigger wheels (diameter 39mm). Otherwise the central wheels won't touch the ground.

Cut the front in an angle you like.

Make a shape for the back and draw it on the base. Cut it out on the scrollsaw.

Now we will make windows in the sidepanels. Use a spade bit with diameter 20mm.

Drill a hole on the back of the base with a 6mm drill, to put a 6mm dowel in.

Now sand all your pieces smooth and glue them together.

When it's all glued together put some mineral oil on it 4 times.

Now it's time for the wagons!

The baseplate of the wagons is 5.5cm wide x 1.8cm thick and 13cm long. We're going to make 3 wagons so make 3 of them.

Use the same shape you used at the locomotive to transfer to the 4 corners of the baseplate.

Before you cut them out on the scrollsaw, decide where you want to put your wheels and drill the holes for them. They must be on the same height as the two small wheels of the locomotive. After that, you can cut the shapes out on the scrollsaw.

In 2 bases you're gonna drill 6mm holes for the dowels on the front and the back. On the third you will only make 1 hole. And put 6mm dowels in the holes.

Make 12 wheels (diameter 34mm) because we are making 3 wagons. And make 6 dowels for the axles, with the method I described in step 2.

Glue the wheels on the axles in the baseplate. Now your bases are ready.

Drill four holes on the corners of the base, but watch out! Don't drill into the hole for the axles! Use an 8mm drill bit for this and 8mm dowels. (5.8cm long). Glue them in the holes.

For the timber on top of it: 1.5cm wide x 1.2cm thick and 9.3cm long. Make 6 logs. Round over the logs on the beltsander.

The dimensions of your stock:

- 5cm wide x 8mm thick x 8.7cm long => 2 pieces

- 5cm wide x 8mm thick x 3.4cm long => 1 piece

- 2.5cm wide x 8mm thick x 3.4cm long => 1 piece

Cut an angle on the 2 same pieces with the bandsaw/scrollsaw.

And glue them together like a container. And glue it on the base.

The dimensions of your stock:

- 5cm wide x 8mm thick x 9cm long => 2 sidepieces

- 5cm wide x 8mm thick x 3.4cm long => 1 frontpiece

- 6.5cm wide x 1 cm thick => First chamfer the edges of this plank, before cutting the length. After chamfering cut it 10.5cm long. (This will be the roof of the cabinet)

Drill 3 holes in each sidepiece to act as windows, with a spade bit 16mm.

For this cabinet, there are only 3 pieces, because the open back will act as a door.

Glue it all together and glue it on the base with only 1 dowel in it. The dowel needs to be on the closed side of the cabine.

You'll need: 1.5cm wide x 5mm thick x 5.5cm long => 3 pieces

Make a hole on one side with a 6mm drillbit, and on the other side a 7mm hole.

Round over the corners on the beltsander.
