Wooden Toy Horse From Pallet and an IKEA Trestle

This is an entry for Creative Misuse contest.

We use an IKEA trestle from Finnward trestle table as wooden body of a pony. We made an additional neck and head out of wood.

First step is making plans. I did not put a lot of errort in it. I just browsed for a random image from internet about a pony with a kid rider, and used it to find a good proportion of body, neck and head in size. All the other sizes just formed during the process.

My middle daughter helped me, and we used mostly hand tools: japanese saw, handplane, screw driver, hand drill, clamps, glue and some screws. We used only scrap/pallet wood what laying around.

First thing to make was the neck.

I found two small boards in size of 450 x 80 x 20 mm (about 18 x 3 x 3/4") and formed the neck out of them.

The next thing was the base what can keep the neck and head. It is from another scrap wood in size 140 x 70 x 22 mm (about 5 1/2 x 3 x 1").

The gap in Finnward trestle is 21 mm, so the 22 mm width is enough to hold the attachment when it's tightened.

We found a board with a big knot what was in the right place to use it as mouth. We formed the head from it

There was a hole in the upper piece of trestle just at the right place to put in a dowel to keep the base and the attachment better.

I formed two ears and used few screws to make connecttion stronger between head, neck and base.

After some final touches it's done.
