Wooden Stand Made From Scrap Wood

A few weeks ago Mom found this neat magnifying glass at a thrift store. I (Steph) really like the look of it and have been trying to find a way to use it at my house. I thought the best way to display it was to make a wooden stand. I got the idea one night and the next morning decided to see what I could come up with!

Find Scrap Wood

We have a woodworker friend that gave us some of his scrap wood a few years ago. I found some really pretty pieces for this project. Tip- check Craigslist for wood scraps.

Cut the Wood

I cut a base and cut the same size for the top holder. The purple base wood is a little wider than the other so I used a miter box to cut the purple wood to size.

Make Hanger

To cut the hanger, I used a 5/8” spade bit to cut two holes in the wood, then I used a hand saw to cut the remainder of wood out. We used a Dremel to sand this smooth.

Test It

I was a little concerned the wood would not hold the weight of the magnifying glass and it would be unbalanced. Mom had a great idea to use double sided adhesive foam to attach the parts together to see if it holds.

Finish the Wood

It did hold, so we took it apart and moved on to finish the wood. Since this wood is so pretty on its own, we used danish oil to bring out the natural beauty.

Glue It Together

Once that was dry, we used DAP Rapid Fuse glue to attach everything together.

Enjoy Your Stand!

I’m really happy with how this project turned out. It’s always fun to use scrap wood to make something new and unexpected. As a Lego lover, I thought the perfect object to magnify on the stand, would be our two minifigures.
