Wooden Maglev Car
We are going to build a track that have a car that will be drifting and floating using magnets.
Maglev is a system usually a train transportation using two sets of magnets, one on the vehicle to repel and one on the track to push off the track and another set to move and elevate the vehicle. For out setup will do some variation of this but only using one set two strips on the track and two strips on the vehicle itself. Let's start!
Supplies
1. Wooden track sizes of 4x2 or 2x1 but could be a plank of smaller size.
2. Wooden object (for example) something smaller then at least 2/3 width of the track for the vehicle and should be light as possible.
3. Magnet strips, at least long enough to cover twice the track and the wooden object twice. 4. Two objects that can be used to hold the side to help the vehicle.
5. Paste glue (or way to attach the magnet strips to the objects).
BONUS!
6. Stronger round magnets (to be added the vehicle).
7. Some nice decorations that can be added to the track.
Gathering the Martials
Make sure you have those fallowing items:
4. Two objects that can be used to hold the side to help the vehicle to be fences.
5. Paste glue* (or way to attach the magnet strips to the objects).
* If using plastic for fencing the object, you should use a hot glue gun (careful as possible).
** Must have a bit of motivation c:
Be sure to work on a seprate table cause all the glowing could get a bit messy, start by placing a cloth on the table if it is possible and placing the wooden track on top of it to start the process.
Placing the Fences
1. Place the wooden object in the middle of the truck.
2. Trace with a pencil the edges of the vehicle.
3. Glue the bottom of the fences.
4. Place the fences of the tranced lined so they could envelop the object just touching it very lightly (still have enough room to move the object).
Adding the Strips
1. Place glue (or remove peal) on the magnet strips.
2. Attach the strip on the edges inside the area of the fences.***
3. Attach the strip on the bottom side of the vehicle on the edges as well.*** ***(make sure to place them in the same order, do not turn one side around when applying to the object)
To the Track! (testing)
1. Place the vehicle in between the track.
2. Try and move the vehicle in the track and look at how it "floats" in between the fences.
3. Try and see how fast and the optimum placement in the track and how fast you can move the vehicle from side to the other.
Bonus and Upgrades :)
1. You can add some extra (flat) magnets on the bottom of the vehicle between the two strips (with glue).
2. You can even decorate and add extra stickers to the track to make it more stylistic (I choose some nice thin plastic grass to my track).
3. Try to think of different objects that you can turn into vehicle and more kind of tracks you can build, I even suggest using your own build of wooden object.
Summary
This was done as a college project, it is my first guide and I hope I explained the basics, it shouldn't be too hard to build and the final product could be an entertaining concept for the age range of 10-12 crowed and should be done with active involvement of them (just be careful of the hot glue gun if used).
Remember be safe and keep playing, magnets are energetic and fun.
