Wooden Illusion

1.jpg

I found a picture of this online but couldn't find the instructions on how it was built. With some trial and error, I recreated the illusion.

Watching the video is the easiest way to see how it works. I've included a drawing which is linked in the video description.

Tools/Materials

Tools:

  • Saw
  • Tape measure
  • Wood clamps

Materials:

  • Wood 2 x 4 by 4 feet long
  • Wood glue

Cut Straight Sections

Cut wood as shown in the pictures. These are all straight cuts so any saw will work.

Cut Decoy Block

Cut decoy block per the figure. I varied the height of the table saw blade to remove the internal wood.

Glue Together

Attach boards together with wood glue – use a clamp to apply pressure. Depending on your camera angle, you might not want to attach the decoy block at this point. Let it sit on the cross member and view the assembly from different angles.

Final Assembly

It should look like this.

I used a Canon DSLR camera for the photo and video. It took a few minutes on a tripod to line up the angles. Using suggestions from viewers of my previous videos, I moved the camera back about 15 feet.
