Wooden Home Decor

Flag final.jpg

Waving wooden American flag decor with USMC emblem embedded.

Supplies

  • Grinder
  • Chain saw disc
  • Shaping disc
  • Flap disc
  • Sanding disc
  • CNC laser cutter
  • 13x26 inch wood slab
  • Paint
  • Board butter (mineral oil and beeswax)

Use the sanding disc to smooth out any rough areas on the wood slab. Oak was used for this particular piece.

Use CNC/laser engraver and appropriate accompanying software to laser engrave preferred crest. Measure out desired location on slab and line up as needed. Cut time for military emblem averages approximately 1 hour.

Install the chainsaw disc on the grinder and use to remove excess material to rough in the desired shape (waves) to personal preference. Be careful not to go too deep as this compromises the integrity and structure of the wood. Waves do not have to be deep to be defined.

Change to shaping disc to add definition and smooth out any rough spots using moderate pressure and speed. Again, use caution to not go too deep in ripples.

Use the sanding disc to finish out any rough edges. If sanding disc is not available, it is okay to use high grain sand paper and smooth by hand.

Measure out location for stars and return to CNC/laser engraver for engraving of stars. I use OMNI Calculating app for accurate calculations of stars and stripes. The app is designed specifically for flag creation and measurements.

For this particular piece, I used 1 inch painters tape to mask off lines for the stripes, placing the strips of tape 1 inch apart. Paint the exposed stripes with the desired color. This piece was requested as monochromatic so simple black paint was used. Allow paint to dry before continuing to next step.

Apply generous amounts of board butter to the entirety of the project. There is no needed drying time. The mineral oil in the board butter will penetrate the wood and hydrate while the beeswax will provide a moderate seal. If desired, a clear coat can also be used as an alternative, this however does require a drying time which can vary depending on the type of finish.
