Wooden Blade Runner Gun / Blaster / Lifesize
A very popular gun, made of wood. I'll try to show you step by step the creation of this props, made three years ago.
I did it approximately in three weeks, but i took my time, so you can do it in one week with motivation.
You can craft it with reclaimed wooden planks. I used MDF because i used laser cut to cut forms.
Have fun !
Supplies
- MDF 5mm
- laser cut or something that cut perfectly
- plastic pipe
- dremel
- paint / air brush ?
Draw and Cut the Principal Forms
Draw principal forms on INKSCAPE, it's a free vectorial software that can be used with laser cut. I drew forms i saw side by side, not the volumes. You have to think all the forms drown in 2D and cut, after that you will create 3D forms with dremel.
When the drawing is done, cut all the forms with laser cut. I used a trotec.
Glue 2D Parts
When you have all the parts, glue them with wood glue and wait for 24 Hours. You will have a big rectangular gun but that is not a problem. With dremel you will carved in wood to create the perfect forms.
Carved All the Gun
This is the longest part, you need to carved the forms. Use reference pictures to be more realistic and similar to the real blaster. Adapt it to your hands on the cross. Take the time to cut again and again to have the perfect shape.
After that, add details like red led, a plastic pipe for the barrel. I engraved it with my laser cut. You can see texts on reference pictures.
Use wooden filler for differents holes, that is the white parts on pictures and sand it.
Paint the Primers
Paint the whole gun in black for the beginning. Focus on the cross in first for painting details. It's orange with yellow shadows, i used a air brush for that effect.
Add Painting Details
Create the metal effect with air brush painting, you can find it easily on internet, i used Ak interactiv painting (aluminium and metal). Take your brush and add details in little parts. You need to paint your gun realistic so it's not bright, this technic of painting for old metal is called "weathering". Reference pictures will help you !
I hope that helped you :D have fun create it !
