Wooden Bench Into Planter

We have had this wooden bench for over 10 years. It sat outside for around 7 years, and then got put in the garage. It had a suffered a lot of natural damage, and the seat had started to disintegrate. So we decided to make it a planter! It took the whole day, but in the end it was worth it.

Supplies

- Screwdriver

-Drill

-Soil

-Flowers

-Cleaning supplies (water, soap, rag/sponge/paper towel)

Optional:

-Paint

-Gravel/Pebbles/Sand

First, you’re going to want to take off the lid of the bench with the screw driver. In this case, it was an extremely small screw driver, because the hinges were all rusted, but it will be different in each case. Next, you will want to clean it out. Our bench was full of dirt and other nasty things, so cleaning it out was a big job. You can also paint the whole thing a new colour, but I would not suggest doing that if you plan to plant vegetables in it, because the paint can poison the veggies.

First thing to do in this step is to drill holes in the bottom of the bench, to drain the excess water. One in each corner of the bench, then one in the middle should do it. Next, you’re going to want to pour soil into the bench. In this case, it took around 2 ,14kg (60 l) to fil it with around two inches of space from the top. Optional: you can put gravel, pebbles or sand at the bottom of the bench (to improve drainage).

Finally, you plant the flowers, or the vegetables (if you didn’t paint the inside of the bench). You can also paint the outside of the bench with cute little designs, or whatever you like. Enjoy!
