materials:

tree branch about 2-3 inches wide and 2 feet long

cinder block, brick, or large rock

thin wood scraps

metal wire

industrial-strength glue

hot glue gun

wire

hand saw

drill

sander

band saw

wire, socket and lightbulb

Making Disks

Using a hand saw such as a Japanese saw, slice the branch into disks, about 1/2 an inch to 3/4 inch each. Use around 30 disks. Then, using a drill or drill press, make a hole in the center of each disk, about 3/4 inch wide.

Put the Disks Together

Using a hot glue gun, glue about 23 disks together slanted slightly backwards. After these, begin gluing the remaining disks on to create a slight curve in the other direction.

Making the Lamp Shade

wood1.JPG

Using thin scrap wood, create about 10-14 circular disks.

Use a band saw to cut the basic shape of the circle, and then a sander to perfect the edges.

The first disk should be about 3 inches, and the last should be about 4.5 inches. Gradually increase the size from the first disk to the last.

Draw a circle within each disk, 3/4" away from the edge.

Use a drill press to make a hole within the inner circle.

Use a scroll saw to cut out the inner circle completely.

Use a scroll sander to perfect the inner edge.

Gluing the Disks

Using hot glue, glue each disk to each other like in the photo.

Glue them from smallest to largest.

Hole for the Wire

on the bottom disk, cut a chunk out of the wood to the edge with a drill or band saw so that the wire can come through and out of the structure

Wiring the Lamp

Before securing the lamp to the base, pull the wire through the neck of the lamp, and then attach the socket. Place the wooden lamp shade over the socket and insert the lightbulb.

Making a Base

after pulling the lighting wire through the lamp, use an industrial-strength glue to secure the wooden lamp to the base, and then further secure them together with metal wire, wrapping around the stone.
