Wonky Trash Truck

Today I decided to make a wonky trash truck because it seemed like a cool and entertaining way to reuse my empty soda cans and other recyclables I had leftover.

Supplies

Here's what you'll need to make one yourself:

  • 8 7.5oz Soda Cans
  • 2 Can Tabs
  • Plastic Bottle
  • Bottle Cap (colored for extra touch)
  • Spray Paint
  • Scissors
  • Hot Glue
  • Sharpie

Cut Cans

The first thing you will need to do is create dashed cutlines at the bottoms and the tops of the cans.

Then, using scissors, carefully cut along those lines.

Now split and flatten the middles and set aside the bottoms and tops

Create Wheels

To create the wheels for the truck, you should cut the opposing sides of one can bottom so that you can force it into another can bottom, since you cut eight cans, you will get four wheels from this.

Create Truck Border

First, use two wheels placed so that half of each wheel lies on the flattened can midsection.

Now, using your sharpie and the top of the wheels as a guide, create an outline for your truck, taking up the full length of the can middle.

Next, take the middle of a plastic bottle, then cut pieces that are the short side of a can middle in length.

Assemble Truck

Gathering your wheels, walls, and windows, use some hot glue to assemble it all together, and use a full can middle as the truck bottom.

Grill and Headlights

Using your colored bottle cap, cut four small square pieces that will look like mini headlights.

Now, take two bottle tabs and layer them with their opposite ends touching to create a truck grill for the front of your truck.

Do not add these on yet, they should be added on last to keep their color.

Paint the Truck

After covering the windows with Painters' Tape, add two coats of black spray paint to the truck in order to create a clean canvas for creativity.

This will allow you to add additional decals and detail later with tape and glue.

Accents and Decals

Using tape or something even easier to create clearer images, make decals for your truck and use the second color of spray paint to make these black symbols stand out.

Add one coat of color two for a mottled mix look, or add two for full color.

Remove the tape after to reveal the windows and the black designs.

Final Touches

Apply your previously made grill and headlights using hot glue and this is what your finished product should look like.

Put it on display to raise recycling awareness or just keep it as a cool decoration elsewhere.
