Witch-craft
This Halloween window decoration is made of duct tape on a plastic backing. When done simply tape the Witch to the outside of any window with clear packing tape. This Witch is approximately 4' by 3', super hardy and a delight for the entire neighborhood to enjoy.
Supplies
Supplies Needed:
- Plastic cutting board
- Plastic drop cloth
- X-acto knife and extra X-acto blades
- Duct tape, SOLID colors: black, yellow, white, red, blue and purple
- Duct tape, PATTERN: black and white checked, plus 5 different colorful pattern tapes
- Change X-acto blade as needed!
Prepare the Backing
Lay the plastic drop cloth onto floor or table top, it does not need to be 100% smoothed out. This will be the backing for the Witch, the place you attach the duct tape. Think of the drop cloth as the 'canvas' for your duct tape 'painting'.
Begin With the Face
NOTE: Making duct tape fabric on the cutting board. Duct tape fabric is made by cutting and overlapping several lengths of duct tape. Sizes will be noted throughout the steps.
a) Face Fabric: Working on the cutting board, cut and overlap 4 lengths of tan duct tape. Approximate face measurement is 6" x 6", add more lengths if necessary. Trim face fabric into a "U" representing a face from the forehead to the chin. Transfer the trimmed face to the plastic drop cloth (position it to allow for the hat above and body below), rub securely to plastic drop cloth.
b) Using a single length of tan duct tape cut 2 ears and attach to each side of the face.
c) Cut a pair of curvy lips from one length of red tape and place on face.
d) Hat Fabric: Working on the cutting board, cut and overlap 12 varying lengths of black duct tape. You may need to do this in several batches. Approximate hat measurement is 16" x 16". Cut to shape and place on top of face on the plastic drop cloth, secure in place.
e) Using one of your PATTERN duct tapes cut a colorful hat band, slightly curved from a single length of duct tape
Add the Shirt
f) Shirt Fabric: Working on the cutting board, cut and overlap 5 lengths of PATTERN duct tape. Approximate shirt measurement is 11" x 7". Cut a simple t-shirt style with a waist and hip. Have one sleeve down (will eventually hold broom) and the other sleeve extended out (to hold the owl). BEFORE you place the shirt on the plastic drop cloth, add a piece of tan duct tape to create a neck. Position the shirt on the plastic drop cloth. Secure in place. This stylish gal is coming together!
Arms, Face Details and Hair
g) Create arms using PATTERN black and white checked duct tape. A single width of tape will do. Cut 2 pieces to create the bent arm, each length approximately 4". Round the cut for the elbow and narrow for the wrist. Cut 1 piece to create the extended arm, approximately 8". Cut the narrow wrist. Secure in place on the plastic drop cloth.
h) Face details complete the Witch head. Eyes: cut 2 white duct tape ovals, 2 blue circles, and 2 black dots for the pupils of the eyes. Build the eyes and place onto Witch face. Nose: cut 2 black dots to give the impression of a nose, secure to Witch face. Cheeks: cut 2 red curves (thin arched shapes) to give cheek detail, secure on Witch face. Hair: Have fun creating her golden locks with thin, randomly cut, curvy yellow duct tape. Optional: add a funky broach at the neckline, an oval in red duct tape and wings in white duct tape. Secure to neckline of Witch.
Skirt, Legs and Boots
i) Create the patchwork skirt from the waist to the hem using single width PATTERN and SOLID duct tape. The skirt is approximately 19" by 2 ft. Random lengths of both pattern and solid tapes make this skirt a showstopper. Cut the hemline pieces into a point. No need to make this into fabric on your cutting board. Just cut and secure onto the plastic drop cloth building the skirt as you go. Belt: cut 1 length of black duct tape for the belt (size to top of skirt), cut 1 "H" shape for the buckle in yellow duct tape. Secure to top of skirt. Legs: Use PATTERN black and white checked duct tape to make 2 legs, approximately 4" in length. Secure to plastic drop cloth. Boots: Boot fabric: cut 3 lengths of black duct tape approximately 8" x 5" per boot. Cut a creative left and right boot. Attach to plastic drop cloth.
Broom, Owl and Flower
j) The broom is a single width of black duct tape, as long and curvy as you wish. Broom fabric of 4 lengths of black duct tape create the "V" shape at the top of the broom. Cut and attach. Random red duct tape shapes create the broom bristles and yellow duct tape is used to create the broom coil. Two lengths of tan duct tape used to create wrist/hands between arm and broom, also between arm and owl.
k) The owl uses 2 PATTERN duct tapes. Wings are large oval shapes in one pattern, the chest is a rectangle in the second pattern. Place wings onto chest. Purple duct tape cut in triangles create the ears and lower chest. Use yellow duct tape for the beak and feet. Attach to bent arm of Witch.
l) Complete the Witch hat band with a bold flower cutting individual petals from yellow duct tape and a circle of PATTERN duct tape for the center. Add to hat.
Trim, Mount, Enjoy
m) Step back and check out your work. Add any additional items at this time.
n) Turn your plastic drop cloth over, color side down. You will be looking at the back side of your Witch and tape. Trim the plastic drop cloth leaving a slight margin of drop cloth beyond the duct tape.
o) Attach your Witch-craft to the exterior of a window with clear packing tape.
Black cat not included, however, Halloween approved!
