Wire Wrapped Ring Tutorial
This step-by-step tutorial will teach you how to make a stylish, yet simple wire ring. I really enjoy making these rings for my friends or family but more so for myself! (I wish I had more fingers to wear them on) This is a very simple look with some fine details and lot's of patience (or rage)
I would consider this level of wire working to be intermediate but my goal is to create an Instructable that will be simple enough to follow for anyone to be able to accomplish this. I may also make too much of an effort simplifying this process and do the exact opposite but what are ya gonna do!?
All of the supplies needed for this project are items you might have already lying around or you lost them and had to buy new ones at an affordable price like me...again. Links are included to where I got mine from!
So if you feel like taking a little time with me to do what we do best and CREATE, lets put a ring on it.
Supplies
Preparations
Gather your tools and materials. I would recommend doing this project on a desk or bench with good lighting and a bright surface to work on because a clipboard with some white paper next to a nightstand lamp is not easier like I thought.
The stone I am using is a natural piece of Labradorite that measures about 3mm
Take your square wire and cut 4 pieces that measure about 3 1/2'' long. This will be your base wire.
Make sure those pieces are as straight as you can get them so that they sit uniformly with each other for the next step.
Beginning the Weave
Hold all four of your square wires flush with each other and begin to panic
Using the 26 gauge round wire, wrap around all four of the square wires 4 times
Now pull the 26 gauge under, up and between the top two square wires. Then over, down and between the bottom two square wires. This is going to begin wrapping only the center two square wires, leaving the outer two exposed. Repeat this until you have made 4 wraps around the center two.
Now wrap around all four square wires twice and go back to just the center and repeat
Repeat this pattern until you have woven around 1 inch
Setting the Stone
I commend you for making it this far and I welcome you to the TRICKY PART
Now we get to set the stone!
Take your flat nose pliers and bend your two most outer square wires upward 90 degrees.
Make two wraps around the center square wires using the 26 gauge wire.
Now spread your two center square wires to create a seat for the stone.
I like to place my stone where I want it to sit just to see how to position it in a way that best works. No two natural stones are the same so play around with it a little to see where it fits the best.
Take a quick 3 hour power nap, lose the stone for a moment just as I did and move on to the next step.
Creating Your Seat
I forgot that the TRICKY PART was more than just one part.
Using your round nose pliers, bend your center two square wires around to create a circular seat for the stone to sit on. Take your time on this one.
Now use your flat nose pliers to bring the wires back in line. Take the 26 gauge wire under and wrap around the other side of your seat twice.
Securing the Stone
Now to secure the stone.
I like to place my stone on the seat as flush against the two, bent up, outer square wires as possible.
Then take the chain nose pliers and place them just above the stone, grabbing the wire with the pliers.
Now bend them one at a time another 90 degrees straight forward.
Place your stone in and work it around to its most secure feeling position and pull those two outer square wires over the stone and directly down the front. They should be pointing straight down from the top.
Finish Your Setting
Now take your chain nose pliers and bend the two outer square wires another 90 degrees to point straight forward and sit uniform with the center two square wires. Take your time, or throw your piece across the room. Whatever your process is.
Once you have all four square wires looking uniform and you have calmed down, it is time to start the weaving pattern again. Follow the same pattern and process as the first weaving steps and stop at about 1 inch.
Closing the Ends
We have come so far. Proud of you!
Finish your weave exactly how you started it by making 4 final wraps around all 4 square wires and snip off the excess 26 gauge wire.
Snip your excess square wires on both ends, leaving about 1mm to fold over
Take your chain nose pliers and bend the 1mm down under the bottom. Make sure this is as flush as possible to avoid the ring scratching you while wearing.
I find folding 2 at a time on each side is best.
Shaping
Take your mandrel and wrap this around to give it a nice round shape.
We Did It
Adjustable, refined, simple, elegant.
You made it. I hope you made it. I hope you continue to practice so you can do better than this.
Thanks for taking this journey with me. I wont forget all the times we had. From the confusing start, the rage, meltdowns...we have fun.
Now go on, go show them phalanges off and make me proud.
Seriously though, thanks for going through my first instructable. I hope it was easy to follow!
