Windowsill Clothes Dryer

The most effective way to dry your clothes after laundry is to hang it up outdoors on a warm sunny day. But if you have no balcony or it is rather difficult to find dryer outdoor - try to make this simple windowsill dryer. It will be most effective on the sunny side of your house. If you gather all necessary materials it takes you about 15..20 minutes to make this "household device".

Tools and Materials

Tools:

  • ruler;
  • marker;
  • screwdriver;
  • wrench sleeve set;
  • any small drill device (d~3..4mm);
  • electric pyrograph

Materials:

  • plastic bottles (1.5 l or 1 l) with lids – 6 items;
  • fasteners set (bolt d~4mm, 2 washers, nut) – 3 items;
  • plastic pipe-crossbar (d~20mm, length~1.5..2m) – 1 item

Design Description

This dryer consist of crossbar pipe and three supports. Each support is made of two plastic bottles connected towards to each other by their own lids with bolt fasteners. The main advantage of this construction is mobility and ease - no anchors to walls, floor or ceiling.

So you need only six plastic bottles with lids, a piece of plastic pipe (from the water supply system) and a few bolted fasteners. The length of the crossbar depend on your windowsill free surface.

The height of the crossbar above the windowsill surface depend on the bottle size. For standard 1.5 l bottle it will be about 62sm and for 1 l bottle - 47sm. In any case it will be enough for practically any type of clothes with possible exception of duvet cover ;-)

Holes Marking

s_3.png

The most difficult part of the work is to make the throughout holes on the side surface of the top bottle of each support. Diameter of these holes must be a little bit less than pipe size (approximately by 1mm).

The contours of the holes can be drawn by the marker.

Holes Making

s_4.png

The best way to make holes in plastic bottle is to use electric pyrograph with minimum heating. It makes strong melted edges of the holes in comparison of knife or scissors usage.

Lids Drilling

s_5.png

Than make holes in the center of each couple of lids using any drill device (diameter at about 3..4mm).

Duplex Lids Assembling

s_6.png

Assembling is starting. Connect a couple of plastic lids by their outside faces and fix them with bolt, two washers and nut.

Water for Stability

s_7.png

Next, fill the "bottom" bottle of the support with water up to 2/3 of its volume. This will ensure sufficient stability of the dryer. Keep in mind that this bottle doesn't have additional holes in comparison of "top" bottle (with holes for pipe-crossbar).

Bottom Element Assembling

s_8.png

Then screw up duplex lid on the "bottom" bottle (bottle with water).

Top Element Attachment

s_9.png

Fix the "top" bottle (with additional holes) in the rest slot of the duplex lid.

Columns Set Making

s_10.png

Prepare appropriate number of support columns according to a crossbar length. In my case I made 3 supports for pipe-crossbar with a length equal to 1.8m.

Crossbar Attachment

s_11.png

Push through pipe-crossbar into the holes of the "top" bottles of each support-column. Than distribute all the columns along the crossbar.

Windowsill Dryer Installation

Install dryer on your windowsill.

Minor errors of holes position will be compensated by flexibility of plastic crossbar and duplex lids fasteners.

If you tired of this device it can disassembled in a few minutes and most of its parts can be used for any other purpose (without any aftermath for your windowsill and walls).
