Wii Read
Hi, Daniel and Levi here. We are Juniors at Illiana Christian High School. This is the Wii bookshelf. It is the perfect place for children who love Wii's and reading. They can store a lot of books, especially the Mario books! We thought of this design because we both had a Wii and wanted something kids could relate to. This project was started because of our engineering class. This idea is to help us understand the process of brainstorming and time management. This process helped communication skills with the school we are donating it to and working with others. After this project, we donated it to a local elementary school. Wii can read together!
Supplies
You will need
- 1" Birch wood
- maple mdf 1/4"
- Three heavy duty hinges
- Screws
- Paint (white and Grey)
- Wood filler Putty
- Wood glue
- Pencil
Also:
- Laser Cutter
- Saw
- Sandpaper
- Tape measure
Brain Storming
Sketch out any ideas you have. Figure out a design and try to identify any problems you have. Once you like it then start making it!
Putting the Ideas Together
We used Autodesk Fusion 360 to help us design and figure out any problems for our bookshelf. For the buttons we designed them on the software Light Burn.
Cutting Out the Wood
Cut the Birch wood to the correct sizes. You will need:
- 54" X 18"
- 54" X 16"
- 16" X 14" (4 of those)
- 54" X 15" (2 of those)
Making the Buttons
Laser Cut out the buttons from the Maple MDF.
Use fusion 360 or Lightburn to make the buttons. You will need:
- power button
- + button
- - Button
- 1 Button
- 2 Button
- Home Button
- A Button
- The big X thing in the middle
Apply the Buttons to the Door
Glue the buttons to the door (the 54" X 18" piece)
Screw It Together
Screw the wood together. Follow the picture.
Fill in Any Holes
Use wood filler putty to fill in any accidental holes. Let dry and sand.
Attach the Door With Hinges
Attach Hinges
Paint
Paint the whole thing white, with two coats.
Paint the Buttons
Use the grey paint to add details.
Books
Put books in it.
Optional Step
This step is optional! We decided to give it away to a school. You can do whatever you want with it.
Conclusion
In all, we had a lot of fun doing this project. We had our minds on what the kids would've liked. This project taught us how to use power tools, communicate, and have fun. Our childhoods inspired this project. Nothing is impossible when you put your mind to it.
