Why Sex-education Is Taboo in Azerbaijan?

As in some other countries, sex education is also considered taboo in Azerbaijan. Sex education is a major knowledge that every adolescent must be aware of since school years, to be able to protect themselves from physical and mental health issues. Unfortunately, the situation regarding sex knowledge in Azerbaijan is not very acceptable. There are still many schools that don’t even teach basic knowledge about our bodies in biology class such as sex differences, pregnancy, etc, they skip those chapters and continue. l, for instance, have never been taught those classes in school, and l had very limited knowledge until l learned from my friends and self-taught. Even though l have been informed, I still lack some knowledge that l have to know but l am not aware of. Not just me, more than half of the girls in our country being vulnerable members of this society, especially in rural areas, has no idea about sex education. They can’t even talk about it when they are on their period, because it is accepted as a shameful topic. Especially parents and religious groups believe that sex-ed violates their cultural or religious beliefs and can have a corrupting influence on kids, this type of education gap can lead to problems in adult life, such as HIV, STD, unexpected pregnancy, and abortion. The ratio is increasing and still, no one is doing anything to solve this issue. We should stop feeling ashamed of this topic and instead increase the awareness, only like this we will be able to help the upcoming generations from facing the issues we face. We must learn and teach to protect each other and ourselves.

I was planning to make it widely noticable, l decided to share this posts on my personal instagram page as well. Like that, l noticed that there are many people supporting this idea and ready to learn all the knowledge about sex-education without any gap.

• Do a research about it, gain all the necessary informations from relieved sources
• Make a survey among society to know about their own opinions
• After all the necessary informations create these posts on Canva and share them in social medias to raise awareness
