White Cake From the Box With a Surprise Inside!

IMG_1868.jpg

Make a beautiful and colorful box white cake with M&Ms on the top of the cake AND on the inside! Cut into the cake and watch as the chocolate trickles out of the cake. Whether you make this cake for loved ones, or just to have something to do while stuck in the house, the result is definitely worth it!

Supplies

I have doubled the ingredients for two boxes of cake mix, as well as homemade vanilla buttercream frosting. I will be listing instructions and ingredients from the Betty Crocker Box Cake Mix. The ingredients below will be enough to make at least four 8" round cakes. ( I will only be using three cakes, so the fourth cake could be a little snack whilst baking! )

The ingredients you'll need will be:

  • Two boxes of cake mix
  • 2 cups of water
  • 1 cup of vegetable oil
  • 6 whole eggs or egg whites
  • Party Sized bag of M&M's (38 oz.)

Vanilla buttercream frosting ingredients:

  • 2.5 cups of softened butter
  • 7 1/2 cups of confectioner's sugar
  • 5 teaspoons of vanilla extract
  • pinch of salt
  • 6 1/2 tablespoons of milk heavy cream

Heat Your Oven

To determine how many degrees you need to heat your oven, you must first look at the size and material of your pan.

For Shiny Metal or Glass Pans, heat oven to 350°F.

For Nonstick Pan, 325°F.

Bake time also depends on what shape and size your pan(s) are.

13" x 9" = 29-34 minutes

Two 8" Round = 29-34 minutes

Two 9" Rounds = 25-30

Bundt = 40-45 minutes

Mix Your Ingredients and Put Into Oven

Grab a large bowl and add your two boxes of white cake mix.

Then, add your 6 egg whites, 2 cups of water, and 1 cup of oil. Mix with a mixer or beat by hand "Vigorously" for 2 minutes or, until well incorporated.

Then, pour your cake mixture about halfway into your pan(s) (I will be using 8" round pans).

Right after your cake mixture has been poured into the pans, lightly shake and tap the pan on the counter to get rid of any air bubbles. ( I made the mistake of forgetting to do this step, as a result, there were small holes inside my cake).

Put cakes into the oven and bake for their designated times.

While your cakes are baking, grab your M&Ms and sort them out and group them based on their color.

Cool Down, Decorate, and Assemble

After you take your cakes out of the oven, put them on a countertop to cool down for about 10 minutes.

Then, put the cakes into the refrigerator to cool for another 10 minutes. While waiting for the cakes to cool, start making the Vanilla buttercream frosting.

Place 2 1/2 cups of softened butter into a large bowl and mix with a mixer until the batter is smooth. Add confectioner's sugar 1/2 cup at a time into the butter and start your mixer. Add 5 teaspoons of vanilla extract and a pinch of salt to the mixture and mix until well incorporated. Finally, add 6 1/2 tablespoons of milk heavy cream until the frosting is at a good preferred consistency.

After the frosting has been made, the cakes are ready to be leveled out. Grab a serrated bread knife and level your cake to be as smooth and even on the top as much as possible.

After leveling all three of your cakes, you can begin to stack them. Between each layer of cake, make sure to put down a coat of frosting to make each cake stick better together. You can add your frosting onto and in between the cake layers using an offset spatula.

For the middle layer of the cake, grab a good ol' glass cup, or whatever kind of cup you have (with no handle) about 3-4 inches round. Put the cup on the middle cake layer and begin lightly pushing the cup down. This will create a hole in the middle cake layer.

After getting rid of the little circle you just cut out, pour in about 2 cups (you can put in more or less) of M&Ms into the small hole.

Finish frosting and stacking the layers of the cake, and then, start to frost the whole cake.

After adding the first layer of frosting all over the cake (crumb coat), put the cake inside a refrigerator to cool for about 30 minutes.

After the crumb coat is well cooled, ice the final layer on the cake.

I also decided to add a border at the base of the cake with the leftover icing, and put on M&M's around the border.

The last thing to do, is to put on the M&Ms!

In rainbow order (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple), place the M&Ms on the top of the cake, like a rainbow. For added decoration, with the leftover icing, I also added clouds!

Done!

Congratulations! We have finished our Rainbow M&Ms white box cake! Great Job! For the best part, you can cut open the cake and watch the M&Ms spill out of the cake. Thank you for reading this and I wish all of you the best!
