Wheelchair Accessible Kitchen
I am a grade nine student fascinated by the potential of 3D design to solve real-world problems.
Introducing an innovative accessible kitchen design, engineered for people with wheelchair disabilities. Maneuverability and space optimization were leveraged to create a functional space for wheelchair users in the kitchen. Two doors open the space to the kitchen, allowing for easy maneuverability of the wheelchair. There is a strategically placed roll-under sink and reachable cabinets, ensuring ease of access without compromising on efficiency. The design also features a lower round countertop table with ample space for wheelchair accommodation and a space under the microwave table. This design and engineering creates a kitchen environment that promotes inclusivity and empowers wheelchair users.
Design Specification
I first created a design specification to list a set of criteria integral to the kitchen, including accessible appliances and features.

Ideation
I utilized real-life scale dimensions for the kitchen components I was going to produce in 3D modelling software. I then created a scale drawing of an ideal kitchen for the design.

Roll-Under Sink
After creating the foundation (floor and walls) of the kitchen environment, I built the roll-under sink by inserting basic shapes and typing dimensions with the dimension tool. The rounded rectangular structure of the sink was hollowed and the faucet was attached to the edge.
Countertop Table
I designed the round countertop table by creating an oval shape with rugged boundaries parallel to the ground. The legs were created using thin rectangular plates angled to support the table above the ground. The round countertop table has lots of space around it for wheelchair accessibility.
Microwave
I modelled the microwave by first inserting a rectangular box. This box was hollowed from the side and buttons were added.
Oven
I designed the oven with a rectangular box and hollowed the centre. Cylinders and rectangles were inserted and adjusted in size to create the knobs.
Stovetop
I produced the stove on top of the oven. The burners were created with flat hollow cylinders and thin rectangular lines angled toward the centre of the circle.
Cabinets
I constructed cabinets and situated them along the walls of the kitchen. They incorporated a tall rectangular box with a flatter rectangular shape in front that has shallow cuts to create the cabinet spaces.
Final Kitchen
The final kitchen design presented in 3D modelling software!
