Wheelbarrow

Drill (or a nail and hammer)

Assortment of plants (as many different kinds as you would like)

Potting mix (I used 50 quarts of soil, but it varies based on the size of the wheelbarrow)

Mulch

Water

Gardening gloves

Shovel

Paintbrush

Paint (any preferred color)

Small garbage bags or grocery bags (optional)

Prepare Your Wheelbarrow

1) Drill some small holes into the bottom of the wheelbarrow. This will allow water to pass through.

2) Use a paintbrush to paint your wheelbarrow with your preferred color. I used the "Barn Red" shade from Sherwin-Williams.

2) Wait for the paint to dry before proceeding to the next step.

Plant Flowers Directly

This is the first way that you can plant flowers in the wheelbarrow.

1) To allow water to pass, put a layer of mulch in the wheelbarrow. This will prevent soil from clogging the holes in the wheelbarrow.

1) Use a shovel to fill the wheelbarrow with potting mix. I filled about 2/3 of my wheelbarrow with soil, but you can fill yours up according to the height of your wheelbarrow.

2) Plant as many flowers into the soil as you would like.

4) Your wheelbarrow planter is complete!

Garbage Bag Planters

This is the second way that you can plant flowers in the wheelbarrow. If you don't have pots, you can use a garbage bag or grocery bag as a container for the plants. It's a great way to reuse them and keep your plants separated from each other in the wheelbarrow!

1) Make some small holes in the bottom of the bag so water can pass through.

2) Fill the bag with soil.

3) Place a plant in the soil.

4) Assemble the plants in the wheelbarrow in whichever way you would like.

5) Your wheelbarrow planter is complete!

Arrange Plants in Wheelbarrow

This is the third way that you can plant flowers in the wheelbarrow.

1) Place your flower pots in the wheelbarrow.

2) Arrange the pots however you want.

3) Your wheelbarrow planter is complete!

I prefer this option compared to the other 2 described above because this is less messy and you can easily move the pots around to change the display.

Ta-da!

Congratulations on completing your wheelbarrow-to-planter transformation! By recycling an old wheelbarrow, you've not only given it a new purpose but also contributed to a sustainable approach to gardening. The colorful flowers you've planted will attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, pollinating and ensuring the growth of your plants. And let's not forget the cheerful melodies of birds that will soon fill the air as they perch on the edges of your vibrant planter, creating a symphony of nature right in your backyard. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy the beauty and life you've brought into your garden—a testament to your creativity and commitment to both recycling and the wonders of the natural world.
