About NextFab

NextFab is a membership-based, high-tech workshop and prototyping center — it’s Philadelphia’s “gym for innovators”.

NextFab’s mission is to foster technical, artistic, and entrepreneurial innovation by making sophisticated design, engineering, and fabrication technologies both friendly and accessible to individuals and small businesses. NextFab provides high-end design and engineering software, 3D printers, 3D scanning, laser engravers, computer controlled machine tools, large format printers, and electronics and textiles tools. A staff of professional artists, designers, and engineers offer training and support to members as well as consulting and contract fabrication services.

At NextFab, we offer a metal shop equipped with many tools available for members to use ranging in necessary skill level. After new member orientation, we offer many tools for members to have access to, such as:

• Edwards 50 ton Ironworker

• Drill Press

• Nardini Lathe

• Surface Grinder

• Many, many, many hand tools

The metal shop also includes other, more advanced equipment as well. As is the case for all equipment at NextFab, if you have used certain equipment before and can demonstrate your proficiency to a staff member, you will be checked off for access to the machine. If not and you would like to learn, you can take the class for that machine and gain access. In the metal shop, these tools include:

• Hardinge Toolroom Lathe

• Jet Vertical Mill

• Bridgeport Vertical Mill (x2)

• Haas VF3-SSYT Vertical Machining Center

• Haas TL-2 Toolroom Lathe

• Flow Mach 4c 5-axis Abrasive Water Jet

NextFab also has a welding area where we offering the following options for welding after the proper training:

• MIG Welding - Millermatic 212

• TIG Welding - Miller Dynasty 350

• Oxy-Acetylene Torch

We offer a full woodshop with many tools available for members to use ranging in necessary skill level. After new member orientation, we offer many tools for members to have access to, such as:

• Bandsaw

• Rotary and Belt Sanders

• Drill Press

• All hand tools

We offer classes on other equipment available in the shop. As is the case for all equipment at NextFab, if you have used certain equipment before and can demonstrate your proficiency to a staff member, you will be checked off for access to the machine. If not and you would like to learn, you can take the class and gain access. These tools include:

• Jointer, Planer, and Wide Belt Sander

• Table and miter saw

• Wood Lathe

• CNC Mill - ShopBot

Here, you can bring your material for painting. NextFab offers professional spray guns to use with your paint or you can bring in spray cans to use. There is a powerful fan in the paint room to move the air and a large filtered wall to spray against.

NextFab offers a chemistry wet lab for member use, equipped with fume hoods, hot plates, and bench space to work on. Great for mixing chemicals or epoxies as it is well ventilated.

This is a great area for members to come and work on their designs, eat, or interact with other members and exchange ideas. Here we have a large bank of computers equipped with the Adobe Suite, Solidworks, Rhinoceros, Eagle, and other helpful CAD and design software.

In the electronics section, NextFab offers general electrical equipment for member use, such as:

• Power supplies – BK Precision

• Function generators – BK Precision

• Oscilloscopes – Tektronix TD 2022B

Some more of the advanced equipment available is as follows:

• Top of the line soldering stations – JBC and Metcal

• Hot air and IR reworking stations – Aoyue Hot Air and Aoyue IR

• Manual pick and place machine – Fritsch

• Reflow oven – Puhui

• Automatic pick and place machine – Manncorp MC385V

Electronics offers classes in Intro to Electronics, Soldering, PCB design with Eagle, and Programming with Microcontrollers (Arduino). Classes are not required to use this equipment, but they are available to help learn the processes.

At NextFab, we offer 3 different textiles machines for member use:

• Consumer grade sewing machine – Brother Lock 3034D

• Industrial grade sewing machine – Juki

• CNC sewing machine – Brother Innov-is 2800D

We have a full photo studio available to members to photograph their designs. This room is equipped with:

Here, NextFab members are welcome to work on their designs using the Adobe Creative Suite, along with two large Wacom tablets for drawing. In addition, NextFab stocks pleanty of media for our amazing large format printers, listed below:

The classroom is where all software-based classes are taught. When classes are not taught in this space it is open for members to use freely. The classroom offers many computers with the following software installed and available for use:

• Adobe Suite
• Solidworks
• Eagle
• Rhinoceros

This space is available for members to reserve and use for the day. It features a large conference table, computer, projector, and a lot of seating. This space is ideal to hold meetings for your start-up company as it is a very professional space, and catering to this room is also possible.
