Wedding Ring Rescue at SFO
It's not uncommon for people with meteorite wedding rings to loose them while at the baggage claim. If you are accident prone and have a magnetic ring, this ible is for you. Not only did this rescue get my ring back, it taught me a little trick for future ring storage.
For reasons unbeknownst to me, my wedding ring flung right off my finger and rolled really far under the baggage claim.
Survey the Scene
It was a long flight with a four and half hour delay. When we got to the baggage claim it was well after 1 am. There is no one around to help so your first step is to take a picture of where your ring is. In my case it was just to the right of post D-36.
Go home and deal with it in the morning.
Materials
This is an easy build, you are adding a magnet to the end of a stick.
- A long stick
- A telescoping magnet (or an even longer stick)
- Some tape
- A headlamp
Assembly
- Cut two pieces of tape about six inches long.
- Tape your magnet to the end of the stick.
Your ring retrieval device is ready for action.
Sneak In
The next morning go back to the airport and try not to get noticed. Treat yourself, use the hourly parking.
Look Natural
Return to the scene of the accident, back to post D-36.
Wait till the baggage claim is empty then put on your headlamp and lay on your belly. Look around till your find your ring then push your ring retrieval device under till you hear the magnet connect. Pull out the stick and behold your lost ring.
We were in and out so fast the parking was free!
Bonus Discovery
Since the ring rescue I have been putting rare earth magnets all over the place. Some in the shop, one next to the bed, one in the kitchen and one at my desk. Now I can stick my ring to the magnets any time it needs to come off and it wont get lost.
Happy building.
