Wayuu Knitting Yarn Preparer Machine

For several years I have liked to knit and I also like to learn about different styles of knitting. There is a type of knitting that I really like, used to make belts, backpack handles, among other things, and this is called Wayuu knitting (because it is originally from the Amerindian ethnic group called Wayuu).

To make this type of knitting it is necessary to create some type of cords made up of 3 yarns, for this, each yarn must be turned the same number of times and then when they are joined together, they wind themselves with the other ones. I always had the problem that it seems almost impossible for me to wind separate yarns for a long time and know how much I wind them to join them with others, I searched and found that people have created machines to do this, but they tend to be very complex, including gears and motor, so I decided that I should come up with a simple machine that would convert the movement of one turn into 3 separate turns.

Finally, my dad and I created this machine that has allowed me to do many things with Wayuu knitting. The renders used to explain the creation of this machine were created with Autodesk Inventor. I hope you like this Instructable and that it will be very useful to all those interested in knitting.

Desde hace varios años me gusta tejer y también me gusta aprender sobre diferentes estilos de tejido. Hay un tipo de tejido que me gusta mucho para hacer cinturones, agarraderas de mochilas entre otras cosas y este se llama tejido Wayúu (por ser originario de los indígenas Wayúu).

Para hacer este tipo de tejido es necesario crear unos tipos de cordones compuestos por 3 hilos, para esto se debe girar el mismo número de veces cada hilo y después al unirlos estos se enrollan solos unos con otros. Siempre tenía el problema de que me parece casi imposible enrollar por largo tiempo hilos separados y saber cuánto los enrolle para unirlos con los otros, busqué en internet y encontré que han creado máquinas para hacer esto, pero suelen ser muy complejas, incluir engranajes y motor, así que decidí que debía inventar una máquina simple que permitiera convertir el movimiento de un giro en 3 giros separados.

Finalmente, mi papá y yo creamos esta máquina que me ha permitido hacer muchas cosas con tejido Wayuu. Los renders usados para explicar la creación de esta máquina fueron creados con Autodesk Inventor. Espero les guste este Instructable y les sea muy útil a todos aquellos interesados en tejer.

1. Unbend the clothes hanger and cut 3 parts of 22 cm.
2. Bend each one as shown in the picture.

3. Open 3 holes
* There is a 4th hole in one of the boards, it will be used for the piece of wood that will allow to turn the machine.

Join the piece of wood used for the grip to the 4th hole of the board.

1. At the short end of the axis (1), place a washer (2) and insert it in one of the holes in the board (3). Repeat this with the other two axes.
2. To secure the board (1), place a washer (2) and finally a clamp on the end of the axis (1).
3. Fit the screws (2) of the clamps (1)

1. En el extremo más corto del eje (1), colocar una arandela (2) e introducirlo en uno de los huecos de la tabla (3). Repetir esto con los otros dos ejes.

1. Place a washer (1) on each axis (2)
2. Insert each axis (2) in the holes of the table (1)
3. Place a washer (2) on each shaft (3) and then a clamp (1)
4. Put the screws (2) of the clamps (1) to fix them.

1. Colocar una arandela (1) en cada eje (2)
2. Introducir cada eje (2) en los huecos de la tabla (1)
3. Colocar una arandela (2) en cada eje (3) y después una abrazadera (1)

Give a circular shape to the end of each wire

Dar una forma circular al final de cada alambre

Attach the wooden stick to the machine so that you can hold it while turning the yarns.
1. Using the wood screws (1) attach the pole (2) to the board (3)
2. Finished machine

Open 3 holes in a circular plastic to separate the yarns when using the machine.

Abrir 3 huecos a un plástico circular para separar los hilos cuando se use la máquina.

1. Tie the three yarns to a fixed point
2. Separate the yarns with the additional element
3. Tie the 3 ends of the yarns to the 3 axes (hooks) of the machine
4. Rotate the machine until the yarns are ready

1. Amarrar los tres hilos a un punto fijo
2. Separar los hilos con el elemento adicional
3. Amarrar las 3 puntas de los hilos a los 3 ejes (ganchos) de la máquina
4. Girar la máquina hasta que los hilos estén listos para ser unidos

When the yarns are ready, release them from the fixed point (1) and move the additional element (2) towards the machine (3), the yarns will begin to wind themselves between them creating the cord.

Cuando los hilos estén listos, soltarlos del punto fijo (1) y mover el elemento adicional (2) hacia la máquina (3), los hilos se empezarán a enrollar solos entre ellos creando el cordón.
