An easy HACK on how to waterproof your clothes by making a hydrophobic solution, at home, to make your life easier…

Hi,

In this instructable I am going to teach you how to waterproof your clothes by making a hydrophobic solution, at home without buying expensive waterproofing sprays like Never Wet which costs 20$ for a small can!

This will not only work on Clothes but also Shoes and Tents!

How Does It Work:

150 Degree.jpeg

Superhydrophobic Coating: It makes the angle of the surface greater than 150 Degree, thus making all liquids roll off the surface of Fabric! This Phenomenon is similar to the one seen in Lotus Leafs!

Materials Needed:

1. Clear RTV Silicone Sealant (Room Temperature Vulcanization Silicone Sealant) [I used Dow Corning 1080 RTV Clear Sealant]

2. NC (NitroCellulose) Thinner

These will be easily available in any Paint & Hardware Shop! And would cost less than 5-6$ and work for many pieces of fabric!

3. Sealed Container/Bottle to shake the materials (I used an empty bottle of Colgate Mouthwash)

4. Container Bowl to Put Fabric In

5. Fabric to Treat

These would be lying around your home ^

Ratio:

The perfect ratio to use the thinner and the Silicone Sealant is 10ml:1g

For 1 Peice of fabric like a cloth the ideal mix is 5g of Sealant with 50ml of Thinner,

Whereas the mix for a shirt would be 10g of Sealant with 100ml of Sealant.

Steps:

For Small Clothes:

1. Put about 50 ml of paint thinner in the bottle

2. Squeeze out about 5 grams of RTV silicone sealant in the bottle containing thinner

3. Close the cap and shake the bottle to mix.Shake until there is no leftover RTV silicone on the bottom.

4. Your solution i ready, now pour the solution in to the container and immerse the fabric.

5. Leave it for five minutes

6. Take out the fabric & keep it under sunlight until completely dry

For Shoes/Canvas:

Follow Steps 1,2,3, similarly

4. Pour the solution in to a Spraying Can

5. Spray the solution Evenly & Nicely over the Fabric

6. Dry Under Sunlight
