As part of our Kite-making Unit in Mr. Skinner's Project Future class at Escalante Middle School, we wrote instructions to help others make our Watermelon Edo Kite.

This will be what your watermelon kite should look like. In my next steps I will be showing you how to do this.

This will be what the inside should look like. In my other steps I will show you how to make this.

First you will need to gather:

4 bamboo spars (2 mm thickness by 3 feet long)

Scissors

Elmer's Glue-All

String

Meter Stick

Tissue Paper 20" x 30" (Red, Green, Black)

First you get a meter stick to draw a straight line, then you put glue on the line. After that you will hold the stick for 90 sec. do this all the sticks like in the second slide.

Add Reinforcements

Then you add patches over the connection points and near the tips of the spars so the bamboo doesn't rip off.

Bridle

Poke 2 holes in the center of your kite.Using a piece of string about 40" long.Push the string in the holes to tie the bottom of the bridle. The other end should be tied to the top of the center spar.

Decorate the Seeds

Make the seeds of the watermelon by cutting some black tissue paper in small patches for the seeds. next you place glue over the green rectangle then you put it on the red.

Flex the Kite

Add a dihedral flex by tying a piece of string tightly around one side to the other side to make it bend.

Add a string to your bridal and you can fly!
