I was in engineering class when I was given the assignment to turn waste into something I can use. I immediately got to work and came up with a few ideas. In the end I settled on a table made out of water bottles and toilet paper rolls. (I am going to be describing how I made the prototype of this table.)

Supplies

• 2 water bottles
• A ruler
• A marker/pen
• Exacto Knife
• (Low temp) Hot Glue gun
• Hot glue sticks
• 2 toilet paper cardboard rolls
• Pair of scissors

I gathered all of my supplies and washed out the water bottles.

Cut off the top and bottom of the bottles. I used a marker to mark the path I was going to cut. I used and exacto knife to follow the line.

I then used a marker to draw a guideline down the middle of the bottles. After that I cut the bottles with an exacto knife.

After I had the two flat bottles I trimmed them down to two rectangles. 16cm long and 10cm high. I recommend using scissors to do this. It is incredibly easier to cut a straight line. This made the sides even.

Plug the hot glue gun in and wait for it to heat up. While waiting, cut the cardboard rolls in half. The ones I used were 10cm long so I cut them at 5cm.

Now that the glue gun is warmed up you can set the rolls aside and focus on the plastic rectangles.

The Table Top

Take the plastic and like line up the sides. Stacking them on top of each other. Then peel back layer “a” so all but one side is touching layer “b”. Now line that side of layer “b” with a small amount of glue. Quickly, press layer “a” down on layer “b” like you’re making a sandwich. Repeat this for each side.

Now that the glue is dry, you can attach the legs to the table top. To start off with take one of the four rolls and put a layer of glue around the top (see picture) and stick it on a corner of the plastic. Press down firmly so they do not separate. Repeat this for each corner.

After you have your table, it is time to test it. After I made it I decided to put a teapot full of tea on the table, as well as a large book. It worked!
