Small Wasted Space Idea Above Basement Stairs in Garage
I built this because my garage was to short to put shelving in front of where the cars are parked at.
Here's how I did it.
If you like this idea vote for me in the Small Spaces Contest. Thanks.
Storage Above Basement Garage Stairs. Wasted Space Made Useful.
Start with building the lower shelf. Your dimensions may vary from mine. My shelf is 5' Wide by 4' Deep, with 2 X 4's laying on their sides for more support. 1/2" OSB is what I used for the shelf, scraps from my exterior walls when building my house. I screwed the 2 X 4's to the bottom plate of the surrounding walls, and then screwed the shelf to the 2 X 4's.
Build the 2 Side Walls
Your dimensions may vary from mine. But my 2 walls ended up with 4' of it @ 44", and 4' of it @ 40" to go up and over the bottom shelf. These are Screwed into the bottom plate on existing wall, and the top plate is screwed into where in lands on a stud on the other side.
Build the Platform of the Storage Room.
This is built just like the bottom shelf. My dimensions were 5' X 8'. I screwed this to the top of the 2 walls.
Build the Stairs.
Stairs can be a hard thing to calculate out. I will do a video later on how to calculate stairs.
Build Storage Room Walls.
Frame up 2 walls to the ceiling, about 3/16 shy of your shortest measurement, this will allow you to easily put your walls up. After walls are built and in place, screw them into the floor of the storage area, and trusses in the garage ceiling. Now cut and screw 1/2 OSB boards to the walls.
Build or Add Shelfs to Storage Area.
Add the stuff that's laying around to the place, to the storage area. And Enjoy it.
