This is the story of how I made up a plan to design a Washer Silverware Organizer.

Define the Problem

Our problem is to design a product that assists in organizations that can help for small homes.

Possible Solutions I Brainstormed and Ideas/Possibilities I Researched

I came up with a list of different types of solutions for organizers.

  • Table Containing Technologies
  • Silverware Organizer Maze; silverware utensils can be washed in the box.
  • Mounted Wall Containing Buckets; mainly used for plants
  • Mounted Wall Shoe Organizers
  • Desk Connected to the Refrigerator
  • School-Organized Desk
  • Library Desk that contains shelves of textbooks.

I research organizers that were related to my brainstormed ideas and solutions.

  • No technological desks; can be too difficult to make.
  • Easy to make for silverware organizers.
  • Bucket Mounted Walls must be put outside; plants have to be lighter.
  • Buckets should not be hangers, but connected to the walls.
  • Mounted Wall Shoe Organizers must be completely different from most
  • Shoe Racks instead of just boxes and cubbies.
  • Not much research about connected refrigerators for desks.
  • Desks can connect to library shelves, but desk tables should not be too big.

Establish Criteria and Constraints

After I chose to design a silverware organizer that will become my best solution, here are the measurements I will identify:

  • Height must be 2 inches
  • Width must be 8 inches
  • Length must be 16 inches

Considering Alternative Solutions and Selecting the Best Approach

The three special and different designs that I would make are Silverware Chest Organizer, Washable Silverware Organizer, and Abstract Silverware Organizer. Therefore, each design I came up with has a list of features.

Design 1 (Silverware Chest Organizer):

  • Contains two silverware tray drawers connected with joints.
  • Can be a little smaller for each silverware tray drawers with more utensils to fit inside.
  • Silverware organizer with two tray drawers shaped like a storage chest, but in different forms.
  • There can be a lid on the inside.
  • No plastic or fabric products.
  • Two silverware tray drawers connected should fit inside the drawer without making it tight.
  • Made of hardwood.

Design 2 (Washer Silverware Organizer):

  • Made of hard metal.
  • Can be used to wash with a soap sponge if they have dirt, grease, and odor inside the silverware.
  • Thick bars instead of just wooden ground of silverware.
  • Can put dirty utensils inside the washable silverware organizer.
  • Includes a blank silver drawer box to let silverware utensils be dry.

Design 3 (Abstract Silverware Organizer):

  • Much abstract and mixed rooms.
  • Each room of the abstract organizer in different direction and placement, but with the same length and width.
  • Can be used to put more utensils in more than 8 rooms.
  • Made of redwood.

Which design is better to make?

Design 1 (Silverware Chest Organizer): Even though this chest silverware organizer can bring some new innovations, it can have major flaws and malfunctions, like not opening the chest while it's in the drawer. The only improvements this design has is putting more utensils on both parts of the chest organizer.

Design 2 (Washer Silverware Organizer): Few innovations and functionality can be mediocre, but I can see that it can have much improvements when we put dirty utensils inside. All utensils can be washed quickly if the washer silverware box is filled with water.

Design 3 (Abstract Silverware Organizer): Some innovations and aspects can be accurate, but many big utensils may not fit in all rooms and also, all utensils do not fit in very small rooms.

Conclusion of Selecting an Approach: I chose Design 2; Washer Silverware Organizer as my best design to make.

Develop a Design Proposal

Here is my plan and solution for making the whole washable silverware organizer. This silverware organizer can be washed by using water, soap, and sponge to clean all dirty utensils. There will be about more than 6 rooms, which includes spoons, forks, small knives, chopping knives, spatulas, whisk tools, chopsticks, and more. Wood products will not be included for this design, only silver metal or iron.

Make a Model or Prototype

This is the first prototype I made as a dishwashing silverware organizer.

Test and Evaluate

Screenshot 2021-06-02 203612.png

I added a list of questions before testing my design and seeing what I need to fix to make it improved.

  • Do utensils sink or float with large amounts of water?
  • Does the bottom of the interior organizer need more or less bars?
  • Do the bars need to be thicker or thinner?
  • Can all utensils fit in any perfect room?
  • Can the bottom of the interior organizer touch the drawer box?
  • Will the tip of utensils get stuck or loose on the bottom bars of the interior organizer?

Refine the Design

Once testing has completed, here are a list of improvements and changes I need to make for this prototype.

  • No need to make bars thicker or thinner for the interior organizer, as it’s loose.
  • Also no need to include more bars for interior organizers.
  • Utensils like forks, spoons, and knives can sink with water.
  • The drawer box can be metal while the interior organizer can be polished iron.
  • Interior box must be different and special.
  • Make less room.

Create the Solution

Now that the final prototype of the washer silverware organizer is finished, here are tips to get started using this washer organizer.

  1. Place the right utensils as shown in the picture.
  2. Fill water until the whole drawer box is full, connected to interior organizer.
  3. Put soap inside the interior organizer.
  4. Use sponge and rub many utensils in every and each room.
  5. After the utensils are clean, take out the interior organizer from the box and it's done!!
