Warm Children's Pyjama Pants

This cute, easy and quick design is very warm on a cold winter night. These pants can be made in many colours and materials to suit everyone. This pattern is suitable for sewers at any level and can be made in a matter of hours.

For this project you will need:
• McCall's 2999 pattern number
• a sewing machine (any brand)
• Dressmakers pins
• 1 metre square of patterned flannelette
• 1/4 metre square of coloured flannelette
• singer sewing scissors
• pink thread
• bobbin (same colour as thread)
• elastic
• paper scissors
• hot glue gun
• half a fake pearl
• tailors chalk
• safety pin

1. Take out McCall's pattern 2999 and cut out pieces 15, 16, 17 to the size you want using paper scissors. (In this tutorial I have used size 6). Once cut out put aside and fold in half your patterned flannelette putting raw edges together and wrong sides of fabric together. Lay on top pieces 15 and 16 then use the dressmaker’s pins to secure.

2. Cut around the outside of the pattern and through the fabric using your fabric scissors. Place aside and pull out the coloured flannelette and pattern piece 17. Fold the coloured flannelette in half (raw edges together wrong sides together). Pin down the piece and cut out using the fabric scissors. Now you should have two of each piece

1. Undo the dressmaker’s pins and the paper pattern and set aside. Using tailors chalk mark all necessary notions (notches, seam allowances, front and back). Pick up 1 front piece and 1 back piece and place on top of each other with right sides together. Match up the inside ledges using the notches and pin together.

2. Set up your sewing machine with the pink thread and bobbin and set to a straight stitch. Sew a straight sew 1cm from the edge of the fabric stopping at the notch remembering to reverse at both ends. Zigzag each seam edge individually to avoid fraying. Repeat this on the other front and back piece and set both aside.

1. Place the two large pieces right sides together and match the front edges together and the back edges together. Pin along the crotch with dressmaker’s pins and sew a straight seam on both sides (reverse around the entire crotch to reinforce the area) and zigzag all the edges. Sew up the rest of the inside leg. Pin down the outer legs and sew a straight seam 1cm away from the edge then zigzag.

1. Move to the top of the pants and fold down 5 centimetres of fabric then turn under 1.5 centimetres of fabric to make a casing. Pin around the bottom to hold it all in place. Place to pins parallel to each other about 7 centimetres apart. Place on sewing machine and sew a straight seam around the very top 0.5 centimetres away from the edge repeat this around the lower edge of the casing removing the pins as you go leaving the space between the final two pins open (reverse on either sides of the pins to reinforce the fabric while threading the elastic.

2.Attach the safety pin to the edge of the elastic and insert the pin through the gap. Use the safety pin as a guide and pull around the fabric till it reaches the beginning. Cut the elastic two centimetres from the opening making sure to hold on tight so it does not renter the casing. Pin the two pieces together so the overlap each other. Sew over the overlapping reversing about five times. Remove the pins and push the elastic back into the pants. The elastic should not be too tight. Pin down the opening in the casing and sew it up on the machine making sure not to catch the elastic

1. Measure around the legs of the pants and add an extra two centimetres on one side using your coloured fabric draw out your leg measurement time 12 centimetres (this should be a rectangle shape). Fold this shape in half with right sides together.

2. Keep the fabric inside out and place inside the pant leg leaving 8 centimetres of excess hanging out. Pin around the edge of the pant leg picking up the fabric on the inside and use a basting stitch to secure the fabric to the edge. Fold up the 8 centimetres of fabric so that it becomes six. Fold down the top part so that it becomes 5 centimetres and pin all the way around to make a casing. Sew 0.5 centimetres around the top bottom of the casing. Place two pins parallel in the top of the casing 5 centimetres apart and sew 0.5 centimetres around the top leaving this section out (remember to reverse next to the pins to reinforce fabric when threading elastic).

3. Place the safety pin through the end of the elastic and thread through using it as a guide. Cut the elastic two centimetres from the opening making sure to hold on tight so it does not renter the casing. Pin the two pieces together so the overlap each other. Sew over the overlapping reversing about five times. Remove the pins and push the elastic back into the pant leg casing. The elastic should not be too tight. Pin down the opening in the casing and sew it up on the machine making sure not to catch the elastic.

4.Repeat steps 1-3 this on the second leg.

1. Cut out two pieces of the coloured flannelette 5 centimetres x 7 centimetres and place wrong sides together sew 0.5 centimetres around the edge (you should be able to see a little bit of the wrong side of the fabric around the edges).

2. Fold this piece in half and secure it with a dot of hot glue using the gun. Fold the other to edges towards the folded edge and secure with glue. Pinch the fabric together till the glue is dry. Place a dot of glue on the pearl and stick it to the middle of the bow.

3.Using a larger spot of glue secure the bow to the pants and place a piece of paper inside the pants to stop the glue from leaking through ( you can also sew the bow down using a needle and thread)  once the glue is dry the pants are ready to be worn.
