Monsters can walk over water, everybody knows that. But how do they do it!? It looks so easy for them, but try to do it yourself... Wet feet will be your reward for trying.

The answer to this mystery is in your kitchen drawer. Seriously. When familiar with monster-physics, a six year old kid can do the trick. So you might give it a shot. It will take you 15 minutes and no money.

But first, have a look at the video for monster physics gone bad...

If the video doesn't play, have a look at it here.

What You Need

What you need to make a monster walking on water:

  • One googley eye (hobby store, or practice your surgery skills on a doll)
  • 3 "twist ties" that come with garbage bags (about 15 cm / 6" long)
(the plastic coated iron wires, that you wrap around a garbage bag to close it...)

Optional:
  • Paper, markers, scissors and some glue to make a tongue or other enhancements.

Make a Monster Body

I think the pictures will explain what you need to do. All texts are added as comment to the pictures as well...

To make the legs and body:
  • Picture 1: Fold two pieces of tier in a V-shape. Make a sharp fold.
  • Picture 2: Slide the V-shaped tiers into each other.
  • Picture 3: Twist the legs of one V-shaped tier over the other tiers legs tightly. This fixes the joint.
  • Picture 4: Bend the legs down about 3 cm (1") from the joint. Your monster to be looks like a spider now.

Complete the Monster and Tweak It...

  • Picture 1: Neck and tail: Wrap a tier around the joint of the legs. Make the ends stick out at different lengths. The tail will be 2 times longer than the neck.
  • Picture 2: Bend the neck (shorter end) upwards, and the tail downwards.
  • Picture 3: Give the monster feet by bending the ends of the legs. The curve of the tail should be on the same level as the feet.
  • Picture 3: Add an eye. My googley eye had a self-adhesive back. Extremely easy.
  • Picture 4: With small pieces of paper, you can enhance your monster with mane, or thorns, or fangs. I made a tongue.

...and Learn Your Monster to Walk on Water!

Believe it or not, but you're done! The monster you made can walk on water. Hard to grasp for humans, but very easy for a monster.

Thanks to it's feet of floppy, plastic coated wire and only a few grams of body mass, the monster can stand on the surface of water. The water's surface is strong enough to hold the monster, if you put it on there careful enough. The water's surface will bend quite a bit under the weight of the bug. Have a look at picture 1...

To put the monster on the water (and not in the water), gently place it's four feet simultaneously flat on the surface. The feet should not punch the water's surface, or the monster will sink. See the video in the intro for that.

Is it a unique monster feature to be able to walk on water? Nope. Many bugs can do it as well. Have a look at the second picture.

Have fun making the monster! Posted pics of your makings will be much appreciated!
