Cookie Stamp Maker

In this project, I made a cookie stamp maker for generating your own designed cookie stamp by only drawing.
https://app.shapediver.com/m/cookie-stamp-maker-10

So far, I have finished implementing the following things.

  1. Generating Cookie stamp of STL file from white and black image (.png) file
  2. Test printing
  3. Created web application version of Cookie Stamp Maker

Toward the final presentation, I will conduct these things.

  1. Generate various patterns of cookie stamps
  2. Performance test (using cookie stamps and bake cookies)

About Cookie Stamp Maker System

2Syste.png

In this cookie stamp maker, users just draw the picture, import it, export the STL file, and 3D print it.

In the system, the imported image is binarized, extrude the points of the rectangle grid in black part, and make the geometry.

The geometry is flipped to stop. Then, the Geometry converted to STL and exported.

Grasshopper + Image Processing

To make cookie stamps, I used the Grasshopper and performed image processing.

Image can be imported from Image Sampler and extrude the parts of retanglar grids where is drawn in black.

I used these plugins.

  • Pufferfish
  • Mesh Edit - to use Mesh from points
  • Pancake - to export STL file with one pressing button

I made the image 4*4 with black lines on a white background and exported as png file

Exported Designs and Test Print

The exported design looks good. Therefore, I printed cookie stamps with various extrude parameters.

There was some issue to print out because the printer bed was dirty.

I will clean up a printer bed and try other test prints.

Create Web Application Version With Shape Diver

4.png

If someone uses this cookie stamp maker, they need to download Rhino and install plugins.

It is really hard, and this project is for everyone, including those who have not modeled with CAD software.

For ease of use, I made the web application version of cookie stamp maker.

In the cookie stamp maker's web app, users can upload their drawn design, click the button, and download the STL file of the cookie stamp.

To realize the Web app, I used Shape Diver and its plug-in.

Remake for Web App Version

According to the shape diver site, we can not use several plugins and components.

Therefore, I removed some plugins and components and used a substitute method.

Performance Test in Web App Version

Cookie Stamp Maker Demonstration

This is the third released version of the cookie stamp maker app.

When I import the png file, the app exports the STL file like the figure.

3D Print Test With Several Image

These are outputs of 3D printed cookie stamps based on the drawn design.

It works even in the camera captured drawn design on the paper.

The key point to design is

  1. Draw big & clear image
  2. Use white background and a 1:1 size ratio is the best
  3. Use a thick pen (In computer draw 2pt line width is guaranteed to print)

Check the Working With Actual Dough

7_1.png

In this test, I checked how 3D printed stamp works to the actual dough.

From the test, the upper 3mm extrude on cookie stamp part is better to make a pattern on the baked cookie surface.

There are so many types of cookie dough around the world.

To appear the surface pattern very well. I chose popular dice cutter cookie dough.

Cookie Dough Recipe

  • Egg 1
  • Wheat 240g
  • Sugar 80g
  • Butter 100g
  1. Put on the butter outside of the refrigerator. If the butter becomes soft, mix with sugar into the bowl.
  2. Next, mixing the only egg in the small bowl and combine with 1.
  3. Mix the wheat lightly.
  4. After all, ingredients are mixed, the rest cookie dough about 30min.
  5. Roll out the dough to a thickness of 5 mm.
  6. Use cookie stamps to make patterns on the surface and cut with cookie cutters.
  7. Bake in Oven with 375 F for 10 to 15 mins.

Food safety with PLA 3D printed object

PLA filament which is the material of 3D printed objects is not good to contact with cookie dough.
There are several solutions to it.

  1. Use the Food safety level PLA filament

  2. Use the plastic wrap between cookie dough and cookie stamp
