Vintage-Looking Wooden Riser

Materials to a make this vintage wooden riser:

Helpful Items to create character on the wood:

-these wire end drill brushes

-wire brush

-hammer, chisels, screw driver, etc to rough up the slab

Items needed:

- slab of wood (dimensions are up to you - the more imperfections, the better!)

-miter saw

-orbital sander (a mouse sander or and other handheld one will work fine)

-wood glue

-clamps

-stain of your choice (I used this one and Rustoleum Flagstone)

Start with finding a piece of wood with lots of imperfections and cracks, as this will help achieve the look of an antique piece

Cross cut the piece to desired length using your miter saw.. I chose around 19".

Using the remainder of your stock, trim a piece around 1.5" wide. Create 4 equal pieces. Glue the pieces to the board (this glue brush is helpful) and use clamps to let it completely dry.

Start by smoothing the edges with your sander with 80 grit paper to remove any sharp edges or splinters. Be careful to not remove too much of the surface – I really like the look of the saw marks and I wanted to keep those. Now, use what you can find to create character on the piece. Have fun with this! Some ideas of things you can use are hand planer, hammer, chisel, wire brush, screwdriver, wire brush etc

Apply the stain of your choice! I used this stain first second was rustoleum flagstone. And that's it! For more details and more tutorials, find me at theaccentpiece.com!
