A buddy of mine has a sweet leather lanyard & sheath that he made for his vape. I liked the idea of having my vape handy and not in my pocket. I decided to make a little lanyard attachment for my pen type vape. I had some scrap sheet metal from another project, so the cost was just my time. It works by unscrewing the pieces and fitting it in like a washer. This project would also work with a pen or penlike things that you would want hanging close. I had been debating making this for a couple of weeks. Initially, I was like : Here's a good project to make a CNC machine for. But, I really didn't need all that. I just finished another project and the scraps were perfect for this, why not just do it now.
In the Beginning There Was Scrap. and Tools, Yeah, Some Tools.

Gather your materials:
- Metal scrap
- Sharpie
- Automatic Center Punch
- Drill
- 2 Drill bits as per your pen and lanyard snap
- Safety Glasses- wear when using the power tools
- Tin Snips
- Dremel w/grinding stone
- Vernier Caliper
- Benchtop Belt Sander
- Leather Gloves
- Lanyard
Process for making the Lanyard Washer:
- I took the vape pen apart and measured the barrel so I'd know what size drill bit to use.
- Unfortunately, my bit box is at work, but I found some loose and one that was a hair too big and went with that anyway. It worked. I used the center punch first and then I drilled both holes in the piece with no certain precision. The smaller hole is for the lanyard hook. Once again, I just used a loose bit that was in the bottom of a toolbox.
- Next I snipped around the holes and cut out a figure 8 with an awful small top hole and big bottom hole.
- Test fit. It's a drill bit size too big, but it will work. I'll finish it for proof of concept and then make another when I get my bits home.
- I hit it with the Dremel to clean up most of the burrs.
- Lanyard Washer Version 1.0 is complete. I could polish it further with sandpaper, rouge and felt, but, I'll save that for Ver 2..
Now to make space for it. .. .

To add the Lanyard Washer, we have to make a little space. Otherwise, the battery can't make contact with the coil.
- Measure the Lanyard Washer's thickness and it's about 1 mm.
- Don your leather glove and fire up the old belt sander. It'll get hot fast.
- Oops, I took off 2 mm.
So there's a little gap. You can't even really notice it. When I make another one, I'll use this one still as an accessory hanger washer thing-a-ma-bob. Maybe make a little juice pouch to clip on.
