Robots are usually very useful and productive in helping their human companions. These robots are not that kind! These are useless robots which do nothing more than decorate your desk space and put a smile on your face. To get started in creating your own useless robot you will need the following materials:

  • Plaster
  • Water
  • 3 oz paper cup
  • Measuring cup
  • Popsicle stick
  • Ceramic glue
  • Random assortment of computer parts (electronic junk stores are a cheap source for this)
  • 3 push pins

Let's get started!

Mix the Plaster

For this project, I am using a 3oz paper cup so adjust the amount of plaster/water if you are using a larger cup.

  • Measure 90ml of plaster in a measuring cup as well as 30ml of water into another measuring cup. Pour all of the water into the 3oz paper cup.
  • Add about 20ml of plaster to the water, stir gently but thoroughly with the popsicle stick. Repeat this process until all of the plaster has been added to the water. The plaster will thicken as more is added to the cup and is absorbed by the water.
  • Once all of the plaster has been mixed in and stirred thoroughly, gently tap the cup for 1-2 minutes up and down on a table to help the air bubbles rise to the surface.

Add Push Pins & Let Dry

For this step the "legs" of the robot will be added (and a few other components, if desired).

  • While the plaster is still wet, gently place the three push pins in the plaster. Space them far enough apart for stability as these will be the "legs" of the robot when it is turned over.
  • Optional: If there are electronic components that you want to add, such as wires for a tail, now is the time to do so. Stick one end of the wire, spring or other electronic component into the plaster deep enough that it will securely stay put when the plaster is dried.
  • Let the plaster sit and dry for 24 hours.

Once the plaster has dried, peel away the paper cup. Now the fun begins in creating your useless robot friend!

Create Your Useless Robot Friend

Gather your electronic components and pick out pieces to create a face. I suggest laying them out first before you start to glue. This way you can determine if the parts picked give your useless robot friend the "personality" you are looking for.

Once you have laid out the face, start gluing them on using ceramic super glue. Hold the pieces in place for approximately 20-30 seconds to take hold.

Lastly, add other electronic components to your useless robot for hair, ears, arms, etc.

Now you are ready to enjoy having your very own useless robot friend!

TIP: Electronic components are very dirty! Be sure to wash your hands after completing your robot.
