Upcycled Wire Hanger Tablet Mount

I like to binge watch streaming shows and movies while I'm crafting, and I was getting tired of taking up table surface with my laptop. I had wall-mounted my monitor, so I looked everywhere for an under-monitor mount for my tablet with no success. Here's how I made one from an upcycled wire hanger.

Supplies

You will need:

  • two pairs of needle nosed pliers
  • one wire cutter
  • one wire coat hanger (I used one with a non-slip coating for pants)
  • 1-2 small bungee cords
  • electrical or duct tape (optional)
  • a tablet
  • an HDMI cable and adapter if necessary
  • a monitor (see picture)
  • a wall-mount for your monitor that has extra holes on the mounting plate (see picture)

Prepping and Bending the Wire Hanger

Cut the hook and wrap part off of the wire hanger, and straighten the hanger as best you can. (picture 1)

Find the center of the hanger and bend the hanger about 2-3 inches either side of it to create a "front stop" (picture 2) Then bend the wire at a 90degree angle away from the "front stop". You'll want the front stop to hold the tablet securely, yet not hit the touch screen, so these bends will both depend on your tablet size. (picture 3)

Forming the Hanger

Using your tablet as a measuring tool (picture 1), you'll want to then bend the hanger up at an appropriate width to hold the tablet (picture 2).

Using your tablet and your monitor mount as a measuring tool, you will then bend the hanger to fit through the extra holes on the mounting bracket. (pictures 3 and 4)

Final Mounting

Once you've got the wire hanger bent the way you need to hold the tablet, you're pretty well set.

Slide the hanger through the mounting bracket and pinch together the wire. You can use electrical or duct tape to hold the wires in place and avoid scratching yourself.

Place the tablet on the hanger, and hold in place with small bungee cords.

I used two small bungee cords - one to wrap around the top of the tablet and hold it onto the mount (make sure it sits on the edge and not over the touch screen area), and one to control the cables for both the monitor and the tablet in the back.
