Upcycled Wine Rack Planter

This old wine rack had followed us through three moves but had never once been used for its intended purpose (probably mostly due to the fact that we are not wine drinkers - why we even had the thing is a bit of a mystery!). But always loving to re-purpose items, I decided to turn it into a planter, which is the fate of most items in my house since i love plants!

Preparing the Wine Rack

Since this wine rack had been relegated to the top of the fridge for quite some time it was pretty tarnished and grimy looking. A quick wash and scrub down with a copper scrubber brought it back to life.

Ready to Go!

It only took about five minutes to get it looking good as new.

Gathering Materials for the Planter

The second part of the project was preparing the succulent pots. Since this wine rack had six openings, i used six 6" terracotta pots (available garden centers everywhere for typically under a dollar each). To fill tthem, I used succulents, cactus, decorative stones, crystals, fossils and tea light candles. However, how you decide to fill them is up to you. There is no wrong way, you are only limited by your imagination!

Planter Design

I enlisted the assistance from my 7 year old daughter to fill the pots. We filled five of the pots with succulents, crystals and fossils and filled one pot with just tea candles and marbles.

Putting It All Together

Once the pots are filled simply place them in the wine rack for a unique addition to your patio or table. Light the candles and enjoy!
