Upcycled Fur Pom Pom Bag Charm

This is the ultimate trash to treasure project! Believe it or not, this charm started with a fur-lined leather glove that was found in a parking lot this winter. Normally, there isn't much use for a single lost glove, but with a little creativity, it can become something special. The leather was butter soft and the fur was gorgeous, so I deconstructed it and used the materials to create two new accessories. This tutorial features the fur lining, but be sure to check out my other tutorial to see what I did with the leather. :)

Supplies

  • fur lined glove
  • scissors
  • black thread
  • heavy duty needle
  • key chain fob
  • pillow stuffing

Wipe any dirt off glove, then place in a sealed plastic bag and freeze for several days to kill "anything" that may be lurking in the materials.

Separate the Lining.

Use sharp scissors to snip the stitches that hold the leather and lining together, then separate the fur lining from the leather glove.

Cut the Fur.

Cut the fur lining open so that it lays flat. From this piece, cut the largest circle you can. (Mine is more square, but if I did this again, I'd be sure to make it more round.) This will form the base of your pom pom charm.

Add the Keychain.

Stitch the end of your key chain to the leather just inside the edge, leaving the chain hanging out.

Stitch the Edges.

Stitch all the way around the edge of the fur piece, as close to the edge as you can. Leave a 2-3" tail of thread at the starting end, so you have something to tie off when you get all the way around.

Stuff the Pom Pom.

When you've finished stitching all the way around, tug on the tail ends to draw up the stitches and create a little pocket in the fur. Fill the pocket with pillow stuffing as you go. (I used recycled fill from an old pillow, but you could also use fabric scraps, old stockings, whatever...) When you are happy with the shape, stitch the pocket closed, making sure that the keychain is hanging out.

Voila!
