Our team C.A.R.L created the Up house gumball machine.

Supplies

Make the Base

The base of the cliff should be 15” by 15”. The walls of the base should be 15” by 30”. After the basic square and rectangle shapes are made, ridges should be added with the measurements shown in the pictures below so that everything fits together like puzzle pieces.

Without ridges:

With Ridges:

After you have your base parts made, it is time to laser cut it and glue it together using hot glue and super glue (super glue highly is recommended). When putting the cliff together, cut two pieces of PVC pipe that touches from the very bottom to the top of the cliff for structural support. Use glue to hold it in place, the pipes should fit snugly into place (should not be loose but not big enough to mess up the base).

To decorate the cliff, use whatever colors of paint you feel would look best. What is recommended is to use gray paint for the base color of the cliff and then browns or other earthy tones to give the cliff detail and definition. Also as recommended, use blue paint to create a solid base color for the waterfall that is depicted in the movie, Use other lighter toned colors such as white to add detail to the water.

At the very bottom of the cliff, use spray foam in order to give the cliff dimension and extra support. It doesn’t have to look perfect, just place it where it feels right and use as much as you feel is needed.

Make and Assemble the House

For this part, you will need the file for the structure of the house. This includes the walls and ceilings.

You will need to cut these pieces out and put them off to the side until the rest of the house is made.

Next, you will need to 3D print the windows, porch/ stairs, the door, and the coin mechanism that uses a quarter in order to make a gumball come out. Here are the files to these:

Windows: https://hallco.onshape.com/documents/589176dcf4dc4b79aeea2d72/w/23b26aea83acec62bc3bb7a8/e/b4b165fd20719e4581adaac3

(This will need to be assembled as shown in the “Assembly 1” portion of this file)

Coin Mechanism:

After all of these parts have been made, it is time to assemble. First, start with the basic structure of the house (this includes the house walls and roof parts). The order in which the structure should be assembled is located in the “Part Studio 1” section of this file. Start by assembling the walls without the roof, that will come later. After the structure has been assembled, add in the windows and porch/ stairs in their respective spots using hot glue/ super glue. Once those have been installed, install the mini hinges on the door and then attach that to the door frame of the house. After everything has been put into place, add the coin mechanism as shown in the file under the section titled “Part Studio 1” in the file named “Mechanism.”

Assemble the House and the Cliff

By this point, everything but the roof should be assembled. Now, Cut semi circles into both pieces of the roof, they don’t have to be perfect, it just has to be able to fit the clear globe comfortably without falling. Once that is finished, complete the assembly of the house by gluing the roof onto the rest of the structure. After that, place the globe in the spot you cut out for it previously. Secure it into place with hot glue or super glue. The globe should be facing so that the area that is open is facing up for gumballs to be put in.

After all of the parts for the house have been assembled, it is time to place the house on top of the cliff. Very carefully and with assistance from others, place the house on top of the cliff and secure it with hot glue and super glue. Once this is finished, you have completed all the steps in order to make an Up themed gumball machine!

The end product should look something like this:
