Ultralight Backpacking Hammock
I recently made myself an ultralight backpacking hammock with local supplies. It was easy and fun so I decided to share it.
It is made with 100% polyester fabric, which is durable, does not stretch and is confortable.
The final "product" which includes the hammock, the suspension lines, a fixed length ridgeline, 2 tree straps and the stuff sack, weight less than 380g (14oz).
It is inexpensive and easy to make.

Supply List
You will need:
- 4m of 100% polyester fabric, I'm using something called "Forro poliseda" from "La parisina" out here (Mexico). 3m should be enough but you can use the extra meter to sew your hammock stuff sack!
- Gutermann polyester thread
Tools:
- Cissors
- Sewing machine
Cut the Fabric
You will need to cut the fabric so you have a rectangle that is 2.9m long and 1.5m wide.
Usually the original width of the fabric is ok.
Sew the Long Edges
Roll hem the long edges see the stitching figure. This will prevent the fabric to start ripping under the weight and gives a nice finish.
Sew the Short Edges
Create the channels for the suspension lines by sewing the short edges. Do a roll hem but with 3 parallel stitches this time.
Good to Go!
Now that you have the main piece of your hammock system you just need to thread the suspension lines through the channels and you are ready for long an pleasant nights in your new hammock!
