I made this because I lost my artist glove for my tablet and wanted to make one that was more comfortable. Its more of a pocket than a glove to give better breathability to my hot palms. The 'pocket' stays on very well without slipping off. This design doesn't have any uncomfortable seams that get in the way or rub as you draw. I also used a second sock for added wrist support, completely optional.

Comfortable. Upcycled. Unique. No Sew. Wrist Support

Also, I write with my stylus resting on the middle joint of my ring finger, if you have a different grip this style might not work for you. If you make any adjustments I would love to see them!

Supplies

Sock (x2 for wrist support, optional)

Scissors

This is a little fun project if you have old socks on hand (on foot? haha.) Holes are OK as long as they are on the heel or toe box. I used a taller sock made from a jersey fabric (the kind of fabric that rolls-up when cut and stretched.) If your sock is a different material or hight you may have to make adjustments.

If your sock is pilling or has fuzz from the print I recommend cleaning that out first if you care to. I used scissors at the end. If you don't know how here is a link: https://www.wikihow.com/Remove-Pilling-From-Clothing

This is a no-sew project but I love hand-sewing so I tidied it up at the end and listed it as an optional step.

Initial Cuts

Cut off the heel of the sock. Start small; it can be made it bigger later if needed

Cut a small slit, about 1in as shown. The slit starts from the base of the sock and runs parallel to the hole you just cut about 3/4in away

Cut from the small slit of the sock to the toe of the sock along the fold

'Open' it up as shown

Cut off the toe of the sock: just above the seam to remove it

Stretch Fabric

Stretch The fabric around the hole in the heel so that the edges of the fabric curl up

This is the main reason I recommend a jersey fabric and what makes it no sew

(the 'before' image is also before I cut the toe-box off so that is why it looks shorter)

'tie' the Edges

Fold the extra fabric over the little 'belt' : into heel-hole

Wrap the wings of the extra fabric through the little space on the side, around the 'belt' (where the scissors are in the photo above - do not cut)

Pull through

Test for Fit

Test for fit

Your lower fingers should fit into the 'pocket' that is created by the ties

You might have to adjust the ties tighter or looser or cut the heel-hole larger for your hand size

Once you are comfy, tuck the ends of the ties into the rolled over edge of the heel-hole

That's all for the main steps, I would love to see if you made it and hear what did/didn't work for you, tips and constructive criticism appreciated. Below are some bonus options.

Optional - Wrist Support

Bring out a second sock

Fold the trunk of the sock up and then the foot of the sock down.

Folding the sock in this twisting motion results in a flat and straight-ish line of fabric.

While wearing the 'glove' fold the wristband upward

Wrap the second sock around your wrist

Flip the wristband down over the second sock

Adjust for comfort

Tuck the extra fabric of the wristband below the second sock

The second sock should stay tucked into the first when you take off and put on the glove (I find it does for me)

Optional - Finishing Touches

I love to hand-sew so I sewed everything in place; it was working great without it but I figured I could so why not. Sorry I don't have pictures for the steps

-loose ends-

I stabilized the 'ties' of the sock by sewing a running stitch through the extra fabric poking out

Then I tucked the ties using the same method above: under the rolled over edges

I then stabilized and compacted the ties under the edges by sewing together the folds and hem of the fabric wherever they met using a whip stitch

-wrist padding-

I sewed the second sock together using ladder stitches along the folds

I sewed the second sock into a ring that fit my wrist size using whip and ladder stitches to roughly stabilize

I inserted the second sock using the same method as above (wear glove, tuck second sock into the wristband, tuck wristband under and around the second sock)

I flipped the whole glove inside out (both socks together) and did a very loose ladder stitch between the wristband of the first sock and the body of the second sock

Cheers, MJ
